Conversations with Flip Schultz

Today we’d like to introduce you to Flip Schultz.

Hi Flip, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
I started my career as a stand-up comedian 30 years ago when I did my first “official” open mike night at a bar in my hometown of Sunrise, Florida…though I had first told jokes on stage when I was 8 years old in a summer camp talent show.

From there I went to college to get my degree in theater and started working down in south Florida at various venues ranging from a proper comedy club to bars, restaurants, bookstores, and anywhere that would allow it. After a few years, I started working on the road and traveling throughout the southeast; I was learning, writing, and building my act. At 23 I was one of the youngest headliners working the road.

After about 9 years I decided to take the chance and move to LA. There I started all over showcasing around town, meeting contacts, and learning the game. I have since appeared on several television shows both as a comedian and actor, toured around the world – including 10 trips to entertain the military, I’ve starred in a spoof movie, and worked with legends like George Carlin, Robin Williams, and Weird Al.

When Covid hit and shut everything down, I decided to move back to Florida to be closer to family and the cruise ship industry where I work primarily right now.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
There are always struggles when you’re an artist/entertainer. First and foremost there’s the issue of work; unless you’re a big name or a friend of a big name who will take you on the road with them, you’re constantly sending out inquiries for work.

Personal life can be a struggle as well. I travel so much that maintaining a personal life can be tough, but it’s the trade-off I guess.

Luckily I haven’t had some of the other struggles that a lot of people in my industry had to deal with, ie: drugs and alcohol.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Again, I’m a comedian. I’m proud that I’ve been doing this for 30 years and I make a good living at it. This is something that I’ve wanted since I was a kid and I never stopped KNOWING that it was going to happen. It’s so cliche, but it’s true…I knew I was going to do this. There was nothing else I wanted to do. And I was lucky to have a supportive family that only asked that I finished school.

What sets me apart from other comics? I’m Flip Schultz. There is only one of me. No one else has my brain; my way of thinking or analyzing the world around me. My style is very silly, animated, and character-driven, plus I’m very good at crowd work. I also like to incorporate technology into my act in one way or another whether it’s videos, songs, or both.

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up.
That time that I first told jokes on stage when I was 8. Not only was it one of the most defining moments in my life, but my family was there to see it. And I remember my paternal grandfather – who was a creative and funny man himself – was there. He was the one who first started calling me Flip. So as I’m doing my act, I told a joke nS he laughed a very loud, gregarious laugh I looked out into the audience and said, “Hi Grandpa”, which got another great laugh.

He passed away soon after that so I don’t have too many memories of him, but that one I’ll remember forever.
