Conversations with Forest Lovett

Today we’d like to introduce you to Forest Lovett. 

Hi Forest, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My name is Forest Lovett. I am a 27-year-old Massachusetts native and singer-songwriter YLM Forest. I decided to move out to Colorado in late December to take a serving job at The Hythe Hotel in Vail. A job that would provide me with a free epic pass. Having just finished a strong stint on Martha’s Vineyard and having accepted another job for the summer of 2022 I wanted to maximize my winter experience. This was big a test for me to live so far away. Three days into the new year I departed Massachusetts with a car packed full of my stuff, including the same pair of skis and boots I have had since middle school. It would take me the next 3 days to get to Denver. I encountered the worst traffic as well as the most treacherous driving conditions I had ever experienced coming through the passes on I-70 from Denver to Vail. What would normally take 2 hours ended up taking 6 hours. But it was all worth it!! I would later come to learn that this is very common. Fast forward almost 3 months and it’s almost time to start my trip back to Massachusetts I am left with countless memories, a new desire to travel more, I feel more musically inspired, I leave humbled by the nature with new friends, and the assurance that my decision to come out here on a whim was absolutely worth it and something I will remember for the rest of my life. Oh and a new pair of skis. 

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Finding housing was my biggest challenge having arrived during peak season. I was staying in an Airbnb which then turned into a Hostel in Minturn. (The Bunkhouse). After lots of networking, I was eventually was able to land a bedroom in a condo in Avon, CO which was only about 12 Minutes from Vail. 

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a singer-songwriter in the Hip Hop/ EDM community. I go by the name YLM Forest. YLM stands for your life matters. Having help run a successful recording studio back home I learned quite a lot during the time I spent in the studio and I was also able to work with some pretty cool people (Dj. Premier, MOP, Flee Lord, Termanology) to name a few. Unfortunately, I wasn’t making enough money to support my dream so I needed to figure out a career that would help get me to where I need to be as an artist. For me, hospitality came naturally.
