Conversations with Gabby Emslie

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gabby Emslie.

Hi Gabby, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
It all started during Covid 2020. I had been working for a local bakery in town for six years, but when Covid happened and my daughter’s school closed, I had to quit my job to home-school full time. Since I had quite a bit more free time and needed an income, I started doing what I love – baking at home! I really wanted to learn how to make donuts since they are one of my favorite treats. I tried recipe after recipe until I finally created one that I thought was good enough to sell. I started Rosy’s Donuts, named after my daughter, and here we are today!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
As with anything, there have been ups and downs. I can’t thank the community enough for supporting me – the constant love and support has really helped get me through the tough times. Working out of my home kitchen has been tough since it’s very tiny. Since my kitchen is small, we can only fit a small fryer, which takes a lot longer to fry up all the donuts. We make it work though, and I don’t mind the small struggles because it’s all worth it when I get to see the happy faces of customers! Luckily, my partner, Beck has been there from the beginning to support me through the hard times and makes running a business a lot easier!

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I have always been interested in the creative arts, whether it was writing, drawing, or baking. Creating new treats and sharing them with friends and family has always been a passion of mine. It’s so fun to come up with an idea and watch people try it and like it too! I would say my specialty has now definitely become donuts, but I love to bake all kinds of desserts in my free time.

Since there are very limited options in Salida when it comes to donuts, that makes Rosy’s Donuts stand out. I try to come up with different flavors every week, while also keeping the classics available as well. I’m proud of all the new flavors I’ve come up with over the past few years!

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
I really enjoy getting to know everyone who comes in for a donut. I love meeting new people, and I also love seeing familiar faces every weekend we are open. My advice for networking is to just appreciate the customers that are coming in, get to know them, and that will help get the word out about your business.
