Today we’d like to introduce you to Gaby Avila.
Hi Gaby, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I am a visual artist and I was interested in the arts since I was very young. I have always liked teaching and I started teaching English and not arts because I was living in Mexico, and at that time I had no formal preparation for what I do now painting and engraving.
When I moved to another city I was able to start my formal education in arts and continue teaching English which I also enjoyed. When my 3 children, who right now live in the USA, grew up, I finally got more time to concentrate on my passion, visual arts.
Due to the pandemic, the place where I was doing engraving closed and I found myself without a place to print my work, so I decided it was the right moment to buy a print and start my own art school where I could offer private classes in monotype and painting.
This past year I had great achievements as an artist. I was invited to have shows in Portugal and Italy, and some other places in Mexico, like San Miguel de Allende. I think the most important success in life is to find your passion and go for it. Always listen to your inner music and things will always work out with time and dedication.
I haven’t opened my Atelier yet because my daughter and I moved recently to Denver but it has been a wonderful experience to live in the city and know its people. I think it is a wonderful city and there are very interesting places to enjoy art. In the meantime, I am always in the process of creating and I hope soon I will find a place to show my art and restart my Atelier.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
There are always struggles along the way. The thing is how do you see them? As a very big wall you cannot climb or as a challenge that will make you better and stronger. A challenge that you will enjoy finding out the process to sort out.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am specialized in Monotype, which is a printing technique on paper, as well as oil and acrylic on any medium like canvas, paper, wood, etc.
I am proud of my achievements along the road of my life, my dedication to my work, and that I have developed my own language and my own particular style.
Maybe what sets me apart from others is that I follow my inner voice to create my own personal style and don’t try to copy what others do.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
I think that many people don’t know that I have invested a lot of time learning from great teachers and that I have traveled wherever they are, whenever it has been possible, to learn their technique and later apply it to my work.
