Conversations with Garrett Young

Today we’d like to introduce you to Garrett Young.

Hi Garrett, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I am 28 years old and have been a performing musician for 15 years. I began learning guitar and how to sing when I was ten years old, and by my early teens, I was performing in bands. My passion for music then broadened to include songwriting and recording, which led me to founding my current band The Garrett Young Collective. I am the lead vocalist, lead guitarist, and songwriter of this Alternative/Rock group that includes my sister and two of my closest friends. We have released two albums that are written, recorded, and produced by myself, and we are constantly performing. We have toured throughout Colorado, the southwest, Texas, and California and have gotten to open for Brothers Osborne, Little Big Town, Mike Ryan, and Ryan Chrys and the Rough Cuts to name a few. We have won multiple awards from New Music Awards and the Independent Music Network and have had our songs go to number one on multiple independent music charts.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I am fortunate to have a mostly smooth road throughout my music career. I believe this to be in part due to hard work and persistence, but my journey has not been without challenges, big and small. Most notably, not being able to sustain a livable income from my music career during a stint living in California brought me back home to the family cattle ranch I grew up on in Colorado. This was a blessing in disguise though, as it led me to many more opportunities and the ability to record and produce my own music the way that I want to!

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
The Garrett Young Collective is a 4 piece Alternative/Rock band. As the frontman, I play lead guitar, lead vocals and write all of the songs. Our music is a unique blend of old styles of rock and roll, alternative rock and grunge, and outlaw country influences. What I believe sets us apart is our musicianship, our exciting and always changing live performance, and our brother/sister vocal harmonies! I am most proud of our camaraderie, our extensive performance history and the great bands we’ve opened for, and to have written, recorded, and produced both of our albums.

We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
I believe taking risks is a huge part of pursuing a career as a creative/musician. Success is based almost completely on public appeal, and that is scary in itself when you are expressing yourself. I have taken many risks, some successfully and others not, but everyone has made me stronger and bettered me and my career in some way.
