Today we’d like to introduce you to Gwen Gomez
Hi Gwen, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I moved here in 2018 to pursue a career in the beauty industry. I went to Cosmetology school and graduated in 2019. After graduation, the Pandemic happened and I couldn’t become a full stylist until “non-essential” businesses were able to open their doors. 6 years since I moved to Colorado, I can say that I am a successful stylist, I have a great partner, and Im the mother to a beautiful baby girl! I am lucky beyond measure and never in a million years would have thought that I’d be where I am at right now!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road has not been smooth! Pandemic, being out of work, my mother getting diagnosed with cancer, being out of work again to care for my mother, finally having a sense of normalcy only to find out I was pregnant and then a month later my mom passing away. I have had many struggles throughout my life but having my mother pass before having my daughter was one of the hardest. I wasn’t myself and went through the motions instead of truly existing. Not to mention postpartum, the emotions of losing my mom and mental health on top of it. I’m still working on who I am beyond being a mother daily.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Im a full blown hairstylist! Last time I was featured, I was enthusiastically starting beauty school. I had goals going into beauty school, and I believe I have accomplished them all!! Although my start was a little more rocky than others, my enthusiasm for the industry has never faltered; I really enjoy what I do and I know I made the right decision to become a hairstylist and stick it through! I currently work at a beautiful salon in Lakewood called Sister B’s Boutique and I specialize in as many hair services as possible! I don’t have a favorite service, I simply love to do hair, and that includes all hair types. Being a hairstylist means you can make anyone feel beautiful, your drive and passion remains intact, and your willingness to put in the work to become better everyday!
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
I started a lot later than most in the industry but if I had one piece of advice it would be to learn as much as you can! Don’t be afraid to learn to do hair different than yours! Whether textured or a short pixie, don’t limit yourself. Take the time to find ways to learn different techniques and styles even if you don’t get those types of services in your chair-you will one day and you never want to be put in a position of denying someone a hair service that you are more than capable of learning. The internet is also a very useful tool, lots of amazing free content but be wary of “influencer” stylists. Being a hairstylist means you can do all HAIR, not just a certain hair type or service.
