Today we’d like to introduce you to Heather Prall.
Hi Heather, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
I first fell in love with painting after taking an art class in the 6th grade. Over the years I continued to explore art mediums. However, as an adult, I found myself consumed by a full-time job in the corporate world working in Human Resources. After a layoff in 2014, I took some time off to travel by RV with my husband and daughter. After spending 9 months living full-time on the road, we returned home.
Staying at home with our young daughter, finally allowed me the time and space to begin painting again. I started to hang my work on the walls of our home and soon received art commission requests from friends and family. I knew that I didn’t want to go back to a corporate career, so I decided to explore a full-time career as a professional artist. I signed on with a local gallery, started participating in art shows, and created a website. Once I realized there were opportunities to make an income, I knew that I could pursue my passion as a full-time career.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Working as an artist is fulfilling, however, there are continuous challenges along the way. Becoming a successful artist isn’t just about the artwork. One must also be well-versed in business.
Managing artwork pricing, branding, a website, social media, the storage and shipping of artwork, and seeking out gallery and show opportunities are all vital considerations to making a business work. There is quite a bit of uncertainty and inconsistency in artwork sales, so it’s important to set goals but also be flexible and patient with the process.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I paint intuitive abstract artworks, inspired by life experiences and travel. You will find my pieces are filled with movement, emotion, color, and texture. I enjoy experimenting with different mediums, so you will see a variety of works in my gallery.
Initially, I began painting with hard body acrylics, then fluid acrylics, and most recently alcohol inks. I’ve created collections with oversized statement pieces, as well as smaller framed works, to provide a variety of ways to collect my artwork.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I was very shy and sheltered as a kid but had a big imagination.
I did well in school and followed all of the rules, so often went unnoticed. Underneath that shell though was a creative kid with big hopes and dreams. Always with a desire to be noticed. I loved drawing, painting, and being with friends.
