Today we’d like to introduce you to Her Mans .
Hi Her Mans, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
We met at a party in the summer of 2023 and quickly found out we were both DJs. From there, we started hanging out and mixing together for fun. Over time, we got more comfortable as a duo and began playing for our friends—whether it was after concerts, Fourth of July gatherings, or just any time we had the chance. We would carry Betsy’s equipment around and set up wherever we could.
Eventually, Betsy’s boss opened Desert Social and gave her an opportunity to play there. She invited Mayra to join, and that became our first official gig at a public venue outside of our friends’ houses. After that, more gigs started coming in, and we realized we needed a name. Mayra came up with Her Mans, and it stuck—it just felt right for both of us.
One of the biggest turning points was when we entered a DJ contest for Beacon, organized by Vivewest. We won a slot as openers, and to our surprise, a lot of people showed up to support us—even though we were the opening act. That was the moment we realized this was more than just a hobby; it was something we wanted to prioritize and really invest in.
Since then, we’ve been able to perform at bigger venues like Meow Wolf, Temple, Mockingbird, Larimer Lounge, Milk Bar, and recently Tracks. It’s been an incredible journey from where we started to where we are now, and we’re excited to keep growing.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Some of the struggles for sure it’s been, proving ourselves as young female djs in the industry. Making time and putting this sometimes in front of our jobs and prioritizing this project. Balancing and incorporating it in our daily basis and old lifestyle.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
What sets us apart the most is what we represent in our communities and backgrounds—we are Latinas, women, and queer artists navigating and making space in an industry that isn’t always inclusive. Beyond just our music, we bring our identity, essence, and values into everything we do, making sure that our presence and impact go beyond the DJ booth.
We’re also deeply involved in helping the local scene grow. Outside of performing, we’re working on projects that support up-and-coming DJs and help build a stronger community within the industry. It’s important to us to not only create opportunities for ourselves but also to uplift others who share our passion.
Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
The pandemic made us realize how much we missed out on opportunities to grow—not just as artists, but as individuals. It was a time when we really felt the absence of connection and how much that impacted us. Some of us didn’t have the ideal support system we needed during isolation, and that made it clear just how essential community is.
Coming out of that experience, we now prioritize building spaces where people can connect, feel supported, and express themselves freely. It reinforced the idea that music and community go hand in hand, and that’s something we carry into everything we do.
