Conversations with Jake Riggs

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jake Riggs.

Hi Jake , thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Aria PettyOne was created in 2019. A drag queen known for her smart mouth, fashion forward looks, and bringing communities together. What was suppose to be a one off performance grew into something I can’t event comprehend. Durango needed more LGBTQ+ events and someone willing to take that on. In the last 7 years I’ve taken what I’ve done in Durango and brought it to many rural communities throughout the state!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Being a drag queen is tough but especially in a small, rural community. The opportunities and supplies are not as readily available as performers in Denver or Colorado Springs. I feel like I have to fight and go out of my way to promote myself and get recognition for what I do throughout the whole state.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Aria PettyOne is the drag hostess with the mostest! Producing, hosting, and performing are all in my wheelhouse. I’m know for being a doer and bringing events and community to any show I do! I’m most proud of the community I’ve established, I don’t know many queens who have built their own drag scene from the ground up. What sets me apart is that my drag isn’t just about me, it’s really about showing people in rural communities they matter. That they can be whoever they want no matter where you live!

What were you like growing up?
I’ve always been a doer and organizer even as early as my student council days. I played a lot of sports and know how to lead and communicate well with others. I’m from Baltimore, MD originally so I’m still very east coast in how I carry myself. I’ve always been fearless and unafraid of what others think of me.
