Conversations with Jake Wheeler

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jake Wheeler.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started as a painting apprentice helping a close friend build his painting business since I had web design and marketing skills already. I’ve always had a passion for art as a young kid and painting came along very easily for me.

But, your standard house painting wasn’t as artistic as I wanted so when we got a chance to apply a Venetian Plaster finish to a home I began to find love and talent I didn’t know I had. I began dedicating tons of time and painting profits to be able to play around with these finishes as we found more customers who had an interest in taking their homes to the next level.

Later on down the road, we noticed our painting business just wasn’t grabbing the attention of the decorative finishes and the only way I was going to be able to stay doing what I love to do was to open ICONIC Wall Finishing to target that clientele specifically. Now, we have been lucky enough to apply our finishes to a few homes and even a designer clothing store on Cherry Creek!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not been the smoothest road honestly. Being in such a niche market, not many people in Colorado are even familiar with Lime based plasters and the luxuries they provide. It’s not like painting where we can pay for a lead service to help us stay busy. I’ve designed countless flyers and have gone door to door all over Colorado to help spread the word and pass them out.

As many small business owners know as well, it takes time to grow your online appearance and so that has been a huge focus. I am extremely thankful for those who have trusted us to complete their projects and continue to help us grow, even as a newer business.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am an artist at heart! I have always had a passion for many forms of art including family members who are extremely good artists as well. We specialize in Decorative Finishes and we prefer to use Lime based plasters and paints for most of those because of the benefits of mineral finishes. I am extremely proud of any work I do and that is something I pride myself in. I have a standard of quality that I just cannot let go of in any situation which helps me succeed within the painting and finishing industry.

I’ve seen countless botched jobs and cut corners to just “get the job done” and that is where I’m trying to set a new standard so that no longer continues. We are the people applying the final touch to make that space of yours beautiful so there is no room for disappointment and so we do everything to perfection.

I’ve always had to learn the hard way in life and usually through making mistakes! It has taken many unsuccessful business ideas and wasted time to get to the point where I am today.
