Today we’d like to introduce you to Jakye Nunley.
Hi Jakye, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I grew up in Aurora, co. My mom had me at a young age and went to college when I was born, I lived with my grandma during the early stages of my upbringing until my mother moved back and then until present I have lived with her. I’ve launched my rap career which helps me pen my problems. I make music to help people my age, younger and older; feel good, feel relieved and feel fun. I believe in music therapy and I love to be that outlet for others. Artist like Jhene Aiko, Westside Boogie, Deante Hitchcock and Jazmine Sullivan have been that musical therapy for me. The recent artist mentioned have inspired my music and the vibes I try to always create.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I wish it was a smooth road but nothing worth having is going to come easy. School was always hard for me I was always to light for my black friends and too dark for my white friends. School was always a struggle for that reason. I never truly fit in or had any real sense of belonging. I had to learn how to love myself and belong to myself and for myself because the world will drive you crazy if you don’t. My goal is to always defy gravity; I have to.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a rapper. I sing from time to time I love both aspects of the vocal art. I am known for my songs like “boyfriend of the year”, “wrong”, “One thousand shots” and most recently “Know it’s good”. I am most proud of my most recent award, “Fan favorite album”, for KHY2 awarded by 303 magazine. This award gave me hope for my career and provided a lot of momentum for my future projects. What sets me apart from my peers is my versatile nature. My music encompasses many different topics.
Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
My current tag line is “The hardest 16-year-old, with the hardest 16s”. A 16 is a one-minute verse.
