Today we’d like to introduce you to Jason Flesher.
Hi Jason, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I am a disabled Veteran of Operation Enduring Freedom and have some difficulties working for others. Sevwral years ago I had watched a guy named Joe do some burning and had become very interested in it. I did my research, built my machines and have been burning since. I was fortunate enough to stumble upon a retail store front for rent here in Black Hawk! Now I rent space to approximately 30 artisans of all types. I have a whole clothing section that I call my stitched art section. I have my fractal burning as well as fine woodworking. I have people who crochet, make jewelry, uranium jewelry, home decor, gnomes and so much more. The store always has new people come in and some that have to leave. The store is always transforming and always looking for new unique art! There are huge plans in the future for both Black Hawk and Central City which will help bring even more traffic to the area and to our stores. Stay tuned as I plan on making personalized shirts with your photos and whatever you enjoyed or want on your shirt. I am not set completely up but will be soon
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The biggest struggle is just getting people in the door and up the stairs or elevator. Many people still dont know we are even there including some locals. We are always putting out new signs and doing what we can to get people upstairs. I always try to let them know that there is an elevator as its a little hidden. I also do a monthly scavenger hunt with a full table of free gifts to choose from for playing!
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
As the owner and only employee at LitWood & Artisan Friends, ive had to learn a lot. I have to keep track of a lot and I have to work with many people. Im proud of the store and all the things I have learned along the way. My fractal burning is unique from anyone else’s and I have never seen it done on the scale that I do it on!
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I love that the city is constantly working on this project and trying to make things better and easier on us. Their support means so much to me! It’s hard to think about something I dislike about the city. I guess if I have to say something, it would be outside the store, at the crosswalks. People dont follow the law when it comes to stopping and many of them even speed up. Im unsure if this is due to the tiny lights that flash, (they are hard to notice) or if its just disregard and disrespect.
