Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessie Schoepflin.
Jessie, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I took an art class as an easy elective in high school and it was there that I found a passion for art. I studied art in college and was able to start taking photography classes and eventually got my degree in Visual Communication and Design.
When I moved back home after college, I started working with the photographer who did our school sports photos and from there built my photography business to senior and family portraits and weddings.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Life has its ups and downs and a lot has changed within the landscape of my personal life, within the industry, and in technology. Taking photographs for over a decade a lot has changed and there have been struggles trying to stay relevant and reach people in the ever-changing social media landscape. It is hard not to feel the pressure to be on every social media platform and turn out content while providing a positive experience to my clients at the photoshoots.
I try to focus on building a connection in person and growing my business through word of mouth and positive referrals. Another significant challenge happened in 2020 with the pandemic and the shutdown of group gatherings specifically the change to the wedding photography industry. I had to make some pivots and changes to my business and now focus mostly on one-on-one connections with my clients through senior portraits, families, and couples.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Sports were always a big part of my life. I played softball through college, so when I finished school and moved back home, I took a job with the local high school sports photographer. I spent several seasons taking action sports photos before I was able to build up my business and transition to portraits.
For the last several years, my focus has been on high school senior portraits, family portraits, and couples. I have always loved the color (which you can instantly see from my bright hair), and more specifically bright, bold colors. That love of color has shaped my photography style where I aim to capture bold, contrasting colors and bright pops of light in nature along the front range.
I strive to build a connection with my clients while I am behind the lens so that we get genuine smiles and an enjoyable experience along with beautiful photographs.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
Carl Grandinetti is the guy who gave me an opportunity to photograph sports and was a great mentor for starting up my business out of college.
My family has played a large role in supporting me throughout my life and career. My younger sister is always down to try out my crazy photoshoot ideas or try new locations with me and shares and supports my work constantly which is so special.
