Today we’d like to introduce you to Joe & Theresa Mazza.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
We met in Nashville, TN while working in the music industry. In Nashville, we worked together in the recording studio and on stage. It was at this time we both began working for FunikiJam World Music theater company, producing music and performing in their children’s educational music shows.
We also worked with independent artists and publishing companies through our studio and production company.
We moved to Colorado in 2011, where we continued our songwriting, performing, and production work. Our passion for seeing art be a force for personal discovery has led us to work in faith and non-profit spaces, encouraging and guiding avocational artists to explore where creativity brings their spirits to life.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Creative work is never a smooth road, especially with the changes in the creative economy for musicians over recent years. Like many musicians, we started out with dreams of a record deal and all that would go with it. As the times changed for that segment of the music industry, we realized that dream was no longer what we were interested in.
We love the journey artists take from inspiration to product and the community that comes with it, but finding the right collaborators isn’t always the easiest. Along the way we’ve realized that the road to commercial success doesn’t always represent the most meaningful expression of our music or collaborations.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
In our work, we often say we are creative chameleons because there are creative outlets that interest us in different disciplines – songwriting, performing, music, video and podcast production, and guiding/teaching/consulting. People are often surprised to learn of something we’re currently working on because they may have thought of us as musicians but then they see we are releasing a podcast or in a theater production.
Whatever we do, we are never afraid of putting our whole selves into it. The art and creative world are often very cynical, and we try hard not to be afraid of being earnest. That’s most evident in Theresa’s songwriting and singing, where we offer our hearts on our sleeves and make no apologies for expressing emotion.
Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
We have recently launched a new creative company called REANIMATE, which is the hub for all of our creative outlets. It’s through this company we produce music and podcasts for ourselves and others, perform our own shows and help businesses and non-profits find the right band for their events, and foster community through creative exploration experiences.
We love working with people who have a creative spark inside them but no idea how to turn it into a flame.
