Today we’d like to introduce you to John Tabor.
Hi John, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I grew up as a missionary kid in the South Pacific. Traveled a lot and got to see some of our worlds. I feel it gave me a great perceptive of how other people have to live not just in the USA I enjoyed it and learned so much about other people and their cultures. I started taking an interest in the tech field at a young age and got to shadow some of the top people in the industry at the time.
I bought the bug and have never looked back. I have had the opportunity to work my way up from the bottom and work with all kinds of artists and gear. I end up going to school for TV and got to work at a CBS affiliate in a small station you do just about every. Being in front of the camera was never my jam but I loved to make it all work behind the scenes.
Long story short I always like to do things on the side no matter what company I was working for. I loved to meet my client’s needs and found owning my own business was the way to do that so in 2008 I jumped in with both feet.
Anyone who has started that own business knows that the 1st couple of years is the hardest. For me, it was the same but we keep hustling till we saw the results that we wanted. Daymond John’s quote “Raise and Grind” I took to heart and went for it. with the ups and downs, I had to keep going I saw success.
It’s been a ride from getting to light the last five Presidents at different national events around the country to being on some of the top tours and working with some of the top artists in the industry. Each event is an experience and you can learn new things about what you have been doing for the last 20 years!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not been smooth I would say like anything you do it has its ups and downs. But I think it has to do with your outlook. You will run into dicks doing anything it’s how I deal with it. I have had an outlook to keep my head up and keep moving my future is in my hands, not yours.
Being a small business owner I would say cash flow is the hardest thing to manage because of how life is I have sat down with lots of other owners and tried to get wisdom from them. I have learned a lot and have walked away from the meetings as a better person for the most part. Overall, I think with all the ups and downs it has made me the person I am today. And I am happy about that!
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
We love to bring color to your world. We do lighting for live events around the nation. From corp to the theater to rock shows and houses of worship.
Lighting can change the feel of a song or of spoken word with the right color and feel. We like to make sure their skin looks natural in the light. we strive to make each client look their best and their event feels right no matter how big or small.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
Oh yes! I have risked it and had to pay for it thousands of dollars. but I learned from it. I could have said it was not my fault or he is not the same color as me or for some reason… which may be true at times. But you don’t get to tell me who I am! I get to control my own destiny and response to you.
I’m wired to get back up when I’m pushed down… and to have a positive outlook on the world. The times I have fallen on my face because I made a mistake make me a better biz owner, husband, and father. I still take risks… but I look at them in a different light maturity helps me make better decisions.
