Today we’d like to introduce you to Joshua Maxon.
Hi Joshua, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’ve always loved to create. In 2012, I found jewelry. I started in a town called Eureka Springs, Arkansas, and found through wire wrapping a sense of purpose. It’s what I’m supposed to do.
12 years later, I still have the same fire in me for creating jewelry. I’m in Colorado now, living a life I’d always dreamed about but never thought possible. Art is my life.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
In order to get where I am now, I had to scratch & claw my way up from homelessness and out of addiction. I was living in Eureka, selling wraps on the sidewalk. I had my own art studio for a short time, but I lost it. There were years of struggle. I used jewelry to get sober, and became a positive force in my little niche community.
Now, I’m proud of myself and what I’ve built. I love what I do. I’m made for this, because I made myself for this.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a wire artisan & jewelry designer. It’s what I do. I specialize in wrapping unconventional materials like acrylics & cz (a kind of taboo in my industry). I love using found objects, upcycling vintage items & breathing new life into old or broken jewelry.
I think what sets me apart mostly is my price point. Since I use cheaper materials, I can charge lower prices and give the same or similar looks. I’m also an extremely prolific artist, and I’m fast.
Im most proud of what I’ve built in general. Personal integrity is important to me, and I feel like it shows in my art. I’m proud of my friends for maintaining the same high personal standards. My community supports me & feels supported by me.
Life has given me all kinds of things to focus on over the years, but the most important thing is what I can control. And that’s creating. And how I see things. I do my best to see the best in others, and everyone deserves a chance.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
The most important lesson I’ve learned along my journey is to remain open. Remain open to new experiences, open to new groups of people, new ways of looking at things.
When you try to stay open, you’re able to potentially expand & grow in ways you may have never thought possible.
