Conversations with Julie Barnett

Today we’d like to introduce you to Julie Barnett.

Hi Julie, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
We are a two-mural team run by Julie Barnett of Lakewood and Abigail Anderson of Littleton. Independently, we have both been in the art and design world for 20+ years. Julie studied at the Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design. Her professional background has been in the mural and faux finish industry collaborating with other local artists throughout the years.

Abby studied at the Savannah College of Art and Design and has a professional background in graphics print and pattern design. Both of us have always had an entrepreneurial spirit, starting multiple businesses from the ground up. In 2022 we decided to team up and create Lupine Design Co. We felt that there was a niche in Denver that we could tap into with our style of murals.

We paint murals for your business, community, and home. We bring bold color and life to your space, providing a boost in the atmosphere as well as a fun natural opportunity for social media interaction.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
As with all start-ups, there has been a bit of a learning curve and a few bumps in the road. However, our past endeavors have lent us problem-solving skills that are serving us well. We like to say we have a “stick-to-it-tiveness” when it comes to our work.

Whether it be painting on difficult surfaces like corrugated metal or stucco or creating our own blueprint for freestanding mural walls, there tends to be a lot of trial and error, but with each obstacle, we tackle it head on, take advice from those that have gone before us, and take what we learn on to future projects.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
We specialize in bold, graphic murals, often including hand lettering on a large scale. We partner with our clients to further their brand identity, enhance customer/viewer experience, and boost the overall atmosphere. We are essentially part of your business’s modern marketing strategy.

We aim to create something that is entirely unique, bringing color and life to a space and providing a fun social media opportunity for engagement for the target demographic. Everything is handled in-house – from design to application on the wall. We’re up for painting on virtually any surface! Metal, concrete, drywall, you name it.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out.
Keep your head down and keep moving forward in your lane. Continue to pour out your passion with integrity and skill and growth will come. It’s so easy to get distracted by comparison in your field, but you have a unique perspective that is all your own, valuable, and that others want to see and experience.
