Conversations with Karen Kaiser

Today we’d like to introduce you to Karen Kaiser.

Hi Karen, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, you could tell our readers some of your backstory.
Well, it’s been quite a journey to where I am today. After taking photos my entire life and being encouraged by my friends and family that I had “an eye” for photography, I decided to turn my passion into a career. Ironically, the same year, I started my other nursing career. It’s been a whirlwind of 6 years, but I’m so happy to be where I am today.

Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Is anything ever a smooth road? Of course, there have been bumps along the way. But every time I hit one, I just center in and figure out what I need to do to overcome it. I have the best support system, especially from my husband, who is very supportive of my career and the chaos in my life.

Thanks for sharing that. So, you could tell us a bit more about your work.
I’m slowly becoming known as a wedding photographer, which is crazy. I’ve always done more lifestyle sessions than weddings, but this year, I tripled my weddings from the last several years and, ironically, received fewer lifestyle inquiries. I hope to keep them both, though! I don’t do many family or newborn shoots, but maternity shoots are special in my heart. And I love my intimate shoots; they are a sort of boudoir meets romantic art. And as far as breaking into the wedding industry, it’s been amazing! I somehow end up with the most fantastic couple ever. It’s been such an honor. I even photographed the most stunning wedding ever at a chateau in France a couple of weeks ago with the most unique and beautiful couple ever. It’s such an honor to capture these moments for people.

Can you talk to us about the role of luck?
Oh gosh, this is a loaded question. I’ve had some good luck, and I’ve had some bad. Good things happen; bad things happen. It’s just a part of growing, not only in business but in life as well.
