Today we’d like to introduce you to Kate Gaston.
Hi Kate, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started Perspective Design Build in 2019, shortly after having my son. I wanted the freedom to make my own living and schedule and I wanted to utilize all of the knowledge and experience I had gained in school and the 15 years of experience in the design industry. I got a business license, I designed my own logo, my own business cards, my own website, and I was off. I had very little knowledge on how to run a business or how to charge for my services and so… I tested software out and invested in the computer programs I needed. I came up with a system for charging where I categorized the design services I could provide – architectural documents, 3D renderings, selections, and project management. My first project in Park Hill, was a Kitchen Remodel. I designed an amazing kitchen with custom elements without breaking the budget. The client was so pleased with how it turned out, she had me remodel her basement and told all of her neighbors and real estate clients about me. Those clients then refer other friends, which has led to a steady stream of clientele coming in almost exclusively by referrals. As a residential designer, when I meet with prospective new clients, I really try and ask the right questions, listen, keep things organized and moving forward, and communicate all expectations. I care about the humans that I’m designing for, I care about the process, and I care about the end result. I learn something new with every new project. I am excited to share my knowledge, experience, and vision with every new opportunity.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I am a designer, not a business woman. The creative side of me often overshadows the practical side. I will sometimes spend too much time trying out different floor plans or looking for the perfect light fixture, and forget that my time has value. I do this because I love it, but I also do this to make a living. I am getting better at being decisive, communicating and selling my designs, and charging for my time.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a residential designer that specializes in space planning, kitchen and bathroom remodels, and selecting everything under the roof, including all permanent finishes, furniture, and accessories. I also use principals of Sustainable Design, Universal Design, and Biophilic Design. I believe in efficiency and minimizing waste, reusing what you can, mixing vintage with new, and using elements and principals found in nature. I believe that good design should be available to everyone, not just the healthy and wealthy.
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
Playing in nature makes me happy because it brings me joy and peace and inspires me. I incorporate my love of nature by using Biophilic Design. Rhythm, repetition, organic shapes, textures, and materials are key components and can be help to reduce stress, improve cognitive function, increase creativity, and enhance well-being.
