Today we’d like to introduce you to Kemist. Them and their team share their story with us below:
Born into a mixture of musical influence and street affiliation, Kemist, 8th ElemEnt. Entertainment Head of Production seemed destined from the start to lead one of the two lifestyles. Unfortunate events during his formative years coupled with fatherhood at a young age not only steered him away from negative paths, but also inspired the desire to create music in the memory of those loved and lost. Forever a student of music, Kemist began playing drums and piano while still in elementary school and joined his first organized music group while in 7th grade. It wasn’t long after that ventures into Hip-Hop production ensued. By the age of 14, he was producing beats for area artists out of the legendary Denver Hip-Hop shop, “The Spot”. The perpetual dream to create his own music became more and more a reality as time went on. Schoolmates and eventual life-long friends gained increasing interest and in the late 90’s, “Illfuzionz” was born, the predecessor to the current crew.
Quite possibly the most appropriately named producer in the game, Kemist beats are more often compared to symphonies or science projects than conventional instrumentals. Unrivaled complexity and selectivity are key components of what make up his style and unabated dedication to quality is the basis behind 8th ElemEnt.’s entire approach to music.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I have had many ups and downs the music industry is not built for everyone. When music is no longer a hobby and becomes your job, the music becomes 90% business and 10% music and if you are not prepared for that it will consume you. Which it happened to me. I went from producing an album that hit billboards to 2 years later being consumed by the business and many other factors that music was no longer important or fun to me. I set music down for close to 3 years and in that time had to fall in love with music all over again.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a musician/music producer
Head of production/part owner of 8thElement Entertainment
I write and compose instrumentals for many artist including artist on our label
I produce Hip-hop/pop music/RnB/Lo-fi/Electronic and many other genres of music
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
Having dreams and high expectations are ok but my biggest learning lesson would be remembering what was most important to the 5-year-old version of me and what made me fall in love with music in the first place. The moment you lose sight of that the music industry will swallow you and spit you out.
