Conversations with Kim Genung

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kim Genung.

Hi Kim, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Locally Boulder is a digital lifestyle publication dedicated to highlighting the very best of Boulder County. Think of it as your insider guide to where to sip, dine, unwind, and create—covering everything from mountain trails and indie shops to standout chefs, cozy hotels, local farms, and creative makers. At its heart, it’s a love letter to a best friend visiting Boulder for the very first time.

The publication is part of the City Living Network, co-founded by Lindsay DeLong of Laguna Beach Living, who has helped people like myself launch their own city guides with the tools and support to tell their city’s story.
The idea for Locally Boulder began when I moved from Chicago to Colorado. I wanted a way to weave my love for travel and adventure into an everyday guide for home—spotlighting the people, places, and experiences that make this community so unique. With a background in design and a passion for storytelling and photography, this has become my way of sharing Boulder through a creative, personal lens.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Starting something from scratch always comes with challenges. Success doesn’t come overnight, and finding your place in the world takes time. For me, connecting with locals and telling their stories has made the road smoother—and far more rewarding.
What I’m not always great with is slowing down, giving myself credit, or embracing the messy middle. But every conversation, every collaboration, and every story shared reminds me why I started Locally Boulder in the first place: to create something rooted in community, creativity, and connection.
I

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I earned my interior design degree from Northern Arizona University and spent some time in the field, but in 2008 life took a turn. I found myself back in the hospitality industry—first waiting tables and eventually stepping into event planning. It turned out to be much more my speed. Even during the economic downturn, people were still gathering to eat, drink, and celebrate. It was a vibrant, fast-paced life that I loved, though the lifestyle came with its own challenges.
When I became a mother, things shifted again. I needed a slower pace and found myself at another crossroads. I eventually found myself unfulfilled back again in the hospitality industry with the lingering question of ” what’s next?”

Then Locally Boulder was born.

My husband and I have always been adventurers—it was part of what connected us from the very beginning. Over the years we’ve traveled internationally and spent countless hours exploring in our RV. Now, with our daughter in 3rd grade, our adventures have shifted closer to home. Writing, photographing, and sharing these local discoveries has become not only my work but also my passion: weaving travel, storytelling, and community into everyday life in Boulder County.

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
I love people and connecting with people. Telling their story feels authentic and effortless.
