Conversations with Laurie Waalkes

Today we’d like to introduce you to Laurie Waalkes.

Hi Laurie, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I have a background in creative arts. My mother was a profound influence, and never met a creative opportunity she wouldn’t pursue. I have a BA in Theatrical Design, and a Master’s Degree in Creative Arts in the Classroom. But in terms of my own art, I was a dabbler until I took a ten -week mentorship in 2022. I learned how to nurture an artistic practice with healthy habits like daily movement, affirmations, and consistent studio time. I found my artistic voice. I created a body of work and reached out to galleries. I have continued to take more workshops and coursework.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
One of my biggest hurdles relates to self-concept. I don’t think it’s unusual for creative people to minimize their visions, work, and contributions. I work very hard with affirmations and meditations to counter the voice of imposter syndrome.

I also have to work constantly to cultivate the business side of this pursuit- contacting galleries and shops, writing newsletters and blog posts, seeking opportunities for shows, and managing inventory. It’s an ongoing balance between painting and reaching out.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I create vibrant, mixed-media paintings, using collage techniques that feature familiar plants which contrast with a background of black and white ephemera such as sheet music, old letters, vintage maps, and graphic stripes and dots. My work also has beautiful quotes about the miracle of this world and our privileges in it. This one is my favorite:

Listen to your life. See it for the fathomless mystery that it is. In the boredom and the pain of it, no less than the excitement and the gladness: touch, taste, smell your way to the holy and hidden heart of it because in the last analysis all moments are key moments, and life itself is grace. -Buechner

I’m known for bright, transparent colors, and the contrast between the natural world and man-made constructs such as geographic notation and patterns, musical notation, etc. I am especially pleased with my State Flowers series, small works that feature state flowers over vintage maps.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
What I like least is the growing trouble with gridlock, housing costs, and the economy in general.
I love Denver’s many creative opportunities and artistic exhibitions, lectures, etc. We can access so much through our world-class museums and agencies. I also LOVE the variety of restaurants!
