Conversations with Lean

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lean.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’ve always had a natural ear and desire to sing. At a very young age, I’d act out all the Disney Princess songs and dance in the mirror to my favorite jams. I loved going to church just to hear the choir sing. I just didn’t know how my gift would one day save my life. I went through an ugly, traumatic, and Public Divorce. It was the very words of my heart, story, testimony, and song that kept me together.

It was like my pain came with a melody. The melody with the beat. And the beat with lyrics to help others. I was signed to JRob Records in 2019!! Now four albums later I’ve seen myself transform, transition and blossom from a domestic violence victim to a strong woman.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Smooth? No way! Worth it? Absolutely! I believe my content was meant to help others! Had I not come through the many challenges and rough days… I wouldn’t have the influence I have today.

My biggest struggle was fear and acceptance of myself. Rediscovering myself as an adult was difficult. My identity was very wrapped up in who I was married to, versus who I was. That was the long highway for me, finding Lean.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a singer and songwriter, I have released four projects and I am working on the 5th to be released in March of 2023!!

I’m most proud of not selling out, not conforming to what society says success looks like, not using my outer appearance to succeed but owning my sound and branding myself from the inside! Going after my dreams and accomplishing goals, seemed impossible at some stages of my life. To see me on platforms and playlists is absolutely inspiring for even me daily. Being a single mother of 5 children I do my best to remain positive for them. I love seeing and hearing and listening to the music from their momma. It makes me so proud. My passion, desire, resilience, and work ethic are what keep me going!

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up.
Definitely singing at my first Talent Show. My family had no idea I could sing, as I was always dancing! They told me several times, why don’t you just dance? I remember looking at them like they were out of their minds….and I just told them to be there! It was my turn to go out on stage.

I was still a little shy then, I closed my eyes and by the end of the song, it was a complete standing ovation!!! My family was shocked at the voice they heard!! I’ll never forget that day. We bring it up often! It was the day their expectations of me changed!!
