Conversations with Lisa Baird

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lisa Baird.

Hi Lisa, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I indicated Lakewood as my neighborhood, but I spend most of my time in Fraser/Winter Park West of Denver. I’ve lived in the front range (Golden) from 2006-2019 before moving full time to Fraser, Colorado in 2019.. I continue to spend time in the West Denver Suburbs as well.

I’ve has dabbled in all types of art but painting is my passion. I’ve painted in the Fraser Mountain Mural Festival three years, participated in Art shows nationwide,, as well as showing work in local venues in the mountain and in Colorado.

Fraser and Winter Park are only an hour and a half from Denver, but the mountain scenery, solitude of nature, recreational lifestyle, and the people enjoying these things is inspirational.

These days I enjoy painting Colorado Landscapes and people and creatures enjoying. When not painting, I enjoy hiking, cycling or skiing on area trails, or just kicking back and enjoying life with my family.

Growing up in the Midwest Istudied art and glassblowing at Hastings College.I have also studied painting at the Art Students League of Denver, photography with John Fielder, and oil painting with Don Sahli, Pem Dunn and Karen Vance.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Painting is both the easiest and most difficult thing I’ve ever done.

These days, I don’t have a problem coming up with inspiration and ideas of things to paint. The more I create, the more I am attuned to nature and to what might make for a great painting.

Once I begin a painting, almost all paintings go through an awkward phase, during which it would be easy to give up. I have to rely on discipline, trusting my painting process, to finish many of my projects. I keep painting until the painting finds me. And that is the most amazing experience for me!

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I enjoy painting scenes of people and animals enjoying themselves in Nature. Because I am fortunate to live in a beautiful place, I have many opportunities to get this inspiration. If it is an animal, a person enjoying a scene, I am most inspired to try to capture this in.my art and hopefully transport others into that place and feeling.

How do you think about luck?
If Luck is defined as success or failure apparently brought by chance rather than through one’s own actions — then I do not believe it plays a role, as I firmly believe our actions do influence our destiny. But I do believe that being open to opportunities and helping others achieve their successes has a way of helping all of us. I have been very fortunate to have great friends and mentors in the world of art, which has made it a very rewarding vocation.
