Conversations with Lois Owsley

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lois Owsley.

Hi Lois, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
In third grade I went to a concert by the Anchorage Symphony in Alaska where my dad was stationed at Elemendorf AFB.
I was mesmerized by the sounds I heard and especially the violins. This was the trajectory of my life musically. The next year I started studying violin and my interest has never waned throughout the years. I graduated from CSU with a BA in Violin Performance and soon after received an MA in Music Education. I have played professionally and taught hundreds of students on stringed instruments and piano in several places (Louisiana, Texas, California, Utah and Colorado. I now live in Castle Rock, Colorado where I am teaching string orchestra at Castle Rock Elementary, teaching privately and recording for my Youtube channel which started the summer of 2018.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The challenges have been to re-establish my performance and studio teaching at every location we moved. The good side is that I have met some amazing musicians and students and been stimulated by the changes as well as have great memories.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I always loved my violin lessons growing up and wanted to be like my teachers…sharing the love of music and having my students grow into musicians as well. Lessons include a comprehensive emphasis on music theory and performance opportunities 1-3 times a year. Some students have gone on to college and received music degrees which has been delightful to see. I’ve added instruments to include violin, viola, cello, bass and piano. I have also been know to teach guitar, ukulele, recorder, harp and even trumpet.

What does success mean to you?
Success in my life has meant that I have been able to share the beautiful gift of music to others and enhanced their life.
