Today we’d like to introduce you to Melanie Warsinske.
Hi Melanie, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Melanie’s introduction to art would not be considered ‘ordinary’. Although, there are artistic genes in the family, Melanie’s interest in art was initially inspired by a high school history teacher. As a shy child growing up, the thought of getting up in front of a classroom for oral reports was almost unbearable. Her high school history teacher, Mrs. Hardy recognized this and let her draw pictures to go along with class presentations, and then encouraged her to study art in college. Her major in art ultimately lead to her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. Melanie’s family was 110% behind her interest in art and the rest is ‘history, as they say’! Abstract expression became Melanie’s favorite artistic style, although she has painted many commissions — painting running horses is still a passion, as they represent her ‘freedom of expression’. Melanie’s paintings continue to “stir many different feelings all at once, taking not only herself, but others on a journey into her soul.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My journey as an artist has been the most rewarding experience I could have ever asked for. My artwork has given me confidence, not only with my paintings, but also as a ‘person’! I was very shy as a child and my artwork has brought me out of my shell. After college, although I had my artwork, I also worked jobs that allowed me to comfortably support myself.
For many years now, I’ve been very fortunate to have a supportive husband and have been able to continue to paint and have had a successful career displaying my art in galleries. I have participated in “Open Door Studio Tours’ in Evergreen, CO — which occurs in September annually (this year, September 19-20) in Evergreen, CO. My longest standing gallery, Mirada Fine Art in Denver, CO just closed after 16 years of successful representation! But, I’m very fortunate to be represented by Infusion Art Gallery in Santa Fe, NM. As far as Evergreen/Denver area representation, I’m actively looking and we’ll see what this ‘new chapter’ brings!
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in Oil & Mixed media paintings. I love to work with texture – so I’m always on the hunt for interesting ‘textures’ to add to my paintings. I love the dimension that added textures bring to my artwork. My list of ‘fun’ additions include, sand, wood, thick-bodied modeling paste, bark off trees, metal, torn textured paper, unique fabrics …. the list goes on & on. If ‘it’ looks intriguing and can be attached to my canvas or panels, I’m good to go! It’s especially fun to see how different light casts shadows on the texture. All these ‘textures’ I mentioned, are what I consider ‘mixed media’.
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
As an abstract artist, I paint from my soul. I paint for myself. The bonus of being an artist, is seeing viewers engage and find interest in what I’m doing. I’m not trying to impress anyone; I’m not trying to emulate Picasso or any other artist — I paint for me. I’m sure that anyone who has a passion can relate. I have people ask where my inspiration comes from … and it’s always difficult to say! I think it’s ‘something innate’ that comes from the soul. Certainly ‘nature’ has an impact, whether it’s a walk in the woods, climbing a rock face, trudging through the snow, watching the clouds build and move in the sky — NO two artists are alike! My paintings typically begin with an added swipe of texture — nothing that requires a ‘plan’.
