Today we’d like to introduce you to Meredith Brooks
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
As a pet portrait artist with 25 years of experience, I have been bringing joy to pet owners in Denver through my unique and personalized artwork from a favorite photo.
2003: The beginning.
Starting in 2003 with just two products – custom canvas paintings and Christmas ornaments – I have grown my business, Lil’ Angel Pet Boutique, into a well-established brand with 14 products I currently paint on.
I started with a basic art studio in the arts district of Denver doing outdoor venues and creating generic portraits for sale at local art galleries. I did commissioned art as well as private shows.
Then from 2007-2019 I decided to dive in and I created a brick-and-mortar store where Lil’ Angel Pet Boutique and Gallery was formed, I combined my pet portrait painting business along with pet food and supplies.
2019 – Present
You can find me popping up in various locations around Denver. From Starbucks to The Denver Milk Market to Cafes and Wine Bars. In December I was found popping up in Breckenridge for the Bernese Mountain Dog Parade. I featured my Christmas ornaments. Currently you can find me next month in three Denver hotel lobbies. Stay tuned for Itinerary. It will be around national dog day in August.
I have consistently delivered high-quality pet portraits that capture the essence of each beloved furry friend. I now currently have 14 different handpainted products and a proven track record, a loyal customer base, and a passion for painting.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I’d say mostly it’s been smooth. My struggles are to stick to a marketing strategy. As an artist my strengths are to create. Numbers are not my friend. I’ve had to become disciplined in this area.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a pet portrait artist from a photo I have done people but I’m known for painting pets. Any pet!!! I’d say I’m most proud of learning how to successfully draw and paint two pets on a 3” round surface. It is difficult to paint that small.
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
1. Don’t try to reinvent the wheel.
2. Use time wisely.
3. Always do research on how you can do better. Think outside the box when it comes to marketing.
