Conversations with Michael Malvitz

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Malvitz.

Michael, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started in photography when I was in graduate school at the University of Michigan getting my Master’s in Architecture. I had studied abroad in China and Italy and really started to enjoy photography more and more. After graduation in 2009, I had a hard time finding a job due to the recession and a family friend asked if I was interested in helping her photograph a wedding as a second shooter. I said yes and ended up doing over 35 weddings that summer with her. From there, I started shooting different things, learning from YouTube, webinars, and just practicing a lot. I haven’t stopped working at my craft since and have gone full-time in photography.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It has been an interesting road that is for sure, but I wouldn’t say smooth. I relocated from Michigan to Colorado in 2014 and had to start fresh. Changing locations meant growing in a new community with not a lot of word of mouth or referrals. I have usually had other jobs while working as a photographer but photography is what I am most passionate about and love the work.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a Wedding, Engagement, and Portrait photographer. I have also shot fashion, lifestyle, real estate and video work. I am most well known for some of the dramatic work that I create in addition to all the different types of work I have done. I pride myself in my ability to create stunning imagery in any scenario. What sets me apart is my ability to walk into any setting and work with my clients to create amazing art.

What were you like growing up?
As a kid, I was very active playing any and every sport I could. Through middle school and high school, I really started to focus on tennis. I was always more interested in science and math as a kid, but as I started through college and grad school I became more interested in art and the creative side of my personality. I was an All-American and National Champion tennis player in college at Kalamazoo College. I still play a lot of tennis in Denver, as well as ski and other outdoor activities.
