Conversations with Miranda and JD Martinez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Miranda and JD Martinez

Hi Miranda and JD, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Ice Cream love runs deep in our family
Back in 2022 Mirandas sister Carrie Yantzer approached us and asked if we would be interested in leasing to buy the mobile portion of Cowabunga as they opened a brick and mortar. We jumped at the opportunity and had the best crash course in learning the business that we fell in love with serving up smiles and the “cowabunga way” 2024 we purchased the mobile business and are looking forward to how we can grow our business.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
We are so lucky to have come across this opportunity through family. We are now finding out how much work is actually done behind the scenes before the work really even gets started but again because we’re sisters it’s easy to talk anything out and get it all figured out.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Cowabunga was grown from 2 educators making a way for their two girls to go through college. Carrie was an teacher and then a Principal and JY was a teacher and coach.
JD works for the school district in our area in grounds and Miranda is a secretary for an elementary school so we share that background of being in service to others. Cowabunga helps us to provide for our FOUR kids, one currently in college, two in highschool and a preschooler. Raising our kids, being able to provide for them is our proudest accomplishment. What sets GJ Cowabunga apart from other ice cream business is that we have our “cowabunga way” set and we all do it with a smile, we do it as a family; Like I said earlier Carrie and Miranda are sisters but our brother Eloy and his family step in and help. Mirandas parents are always eager to help out and it makes us stand out because of the love between us. We’re one big happy family scooping up moolicious ice cream and serving up smiles. We are known for our cowbell and our hollers of “cowabunga!” in unison when we get a tip.

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
Luck?! We’re lucky to be highschool sweethearts, raising four phenomenal humans, surrounded by amazing family and friends and to be able to intertwine our life into our business is more than luck. We are BLESSED beyond measure.
