Today, we’d like to introduce you to Molly Lewison.
Hi Molly, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
I started my floral journey in 2020. This was truly a time when we were all forced to re-evaluate our values. I wanted to work with my hands, tap back into my creativity, and, most of all, make people smile.
I applied as an entry-level florist at the cutest little shop in the art district of Santa Rosa, California, Papillon Floral. They took a big chance on me and taught me so much! The team there truly inspired me. I went to work every day with the enthusiasm of a child, and to this day, I feel the same joy and awe for my job!
Life brought me from Santa Rosa back to Vail, Colorado, and with open arms, Vintage Magnolia took me in. There, I had the honor of learning from an extremely successful business. The inspiration and guidance from both shops gave me the tools and confidence to pursue my own business. In 2023, I opened Double Dutch Floral.
Let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what challenges have you had to overcome?
Being a business owner is a wild ride! Every day has highs and lows, and the lessons you learn are endless. With each milestone, a new obstacle must be tackled. You must acknowledge where you need help and be humble enough to accept it.
Among other things, the constant battle with social media is an obstacle I often have to tackle. It can be hard on your mental wellness, but it is vital for success. I’m constantly learning how to best utilize this tool and create healthy boundaries on the platform.
Pre-planning or scheduling posts has been one way I manage that.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar with what you do, what can you tell them about what you do?
I am an event florist specializing in wedding design. My style of design is edgy yet feminine. I like to push the boundaries of trendy floral concepts and incorporate a more architectural element.
Think western damsel meets urban socialite. My ideal clients are art-forward couples who truly want to create an event and not just piggyback off what they’ve seen before.
We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
Covid was the catalyst for my journey as a florist. It taught me how important the human connection was and inspired me to bring back a sense of specialized customer service. I was in the event industry prior to Covid, and I saw the industry becoming a colder place.
Couples were being treated as paychecks rather than people, and there was no connection or heart in the industry anymore. Then Covid happened, and events were gone completely. When they came back, professionals were even harder on couples. I had to step away from the event industry.
Fast forward three years, and I was working in the floral shop making daily arrangements, and I began to crave that event world again. I had healed my heart as a florist and now wanted to bring my positive spin back into the wedding world and cater to these couples.
