Conversations with Nick Hughes

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nick Hughes

Hi Nick, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I have a degree in Studio Arts from the University of Colorado, at Boulder. I focused on painting and digital art, and gained a reputation in the Denver art scene shortly after graduating. Because I was so focused on large scale works, I worked with several print shops to print my art as large as possible. This lead me to the world of large format printing and vehicle wraps.

Pureblind was started in my garage, with the idea of doing honest and artistic wraps of all shapes and sizes. I wanted to treat each project as a work of art, and I built a culture of obsessing over the quality of our designs, prints and installs. Our team works together seamlessly to produce a product that not only looks great, but stands the test of time.

Since it’s inception in 2017, Pureblind has won numerous awards for best vehicle wrap shop! I’m extremely proud of our 5-star review status!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I struggle with the same things as any small business owner. We run a business that has a very small profit margin, so it’s easy to get upside down. In fact, I have seen many shops come and go because it’s such a tough market to penetrate. We have worked to become more efficient, lower our operating costs, manage our budget, market at events, form alliances and train the right staff (the right way). By understanding all of our downsides, constantly striving for improvement and being brutally honest with ourselves, we have actually done the impossible – we have made a living off of being artists!

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Art is at the center of everything we do. I noticed right away that the art world and design world are very separate entities with different strategies, standards and disciplines that blur together at the edges and rarely overlap. It’s an intentional decision to create artwork, rather than design.

To say things another way – a designer is like an X-ray technician. You can go to school for two years and understand the job completely. Being an artist is like being a doctor. You have to go to “school” for a decade and by the time you’re done you not only understand what an X-ray tech does every day, but you literally understand the entire human body. That’s the only analogy that really illustrates how much further we push the envelope. We are very proud of how creative and intentional we are with everything that we do.

Pureblind is known for doing outstanding art cars, vehicle wraps, wall murals, company logos, trade-show displays, or basically anything that can be printed. We have an uncompromising quality and a stubbornness to always get it right. As egotistical as that sounds, we also strive to have the absolute best customer service! We love our clients and are incredibly thankful to everyone we have worked with over the years.

What’s next?
We just purchased a brand new printer, and we cannot wait to put it through its paces! We will be able to do things with it that will totally transform the way that we work. Our quality will go up, and our operating costs will go down at the same time. A win-win!

We are also excited to be involved in many more events in 2025, not just in Colorado, but nationwide!

There are so many other things we plan to do in the months to come!
