Conversations with Nina Helmich

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nina Helmich.

Nina Helmich

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I have always had an eye for beautiful and natural things such as flowers from my surrounding areas growing up on the island of American Samoa. I would often look at something, and immediately start breaking it down to create something beautiful out of it. I saw many uses of a plant or a tree, to create art. My environment was my inspiration.

Move to the US twice and each time after a year, we would move back to the island feeling home sick. Ha. This time around in 2014, my family and I moved back up to the US for the third time, and this time we stayed. As a mom of seven beautiful children, my desire and motivation to never stop, has always been my children. My ability to see and create beautiful things with my bare hands was and is a gift from God. That, I will always acknowledge.

Before making the official move to establish my business here in the U.S., I spent a few years working for a major restaurant chain as a General Manager, before becoming a District Manager of several locations in Colorado. And with over three decades of experience in both the restaurant field owning two myself, and the event planning industry, I not only come to be respected by many of my happy and satisfied clients who have since become lifelong friends, I am also known by my peers as a trendsetter. With my sense of “island pride”, humility and love for others and what I do, I have always gone above and beyond what I offer with my services. “Seeing the expressions of joy and utter appreciation on my clients faces for the outcome of their events, is the most amazing and gratifying feeling ever” (Nina).

A strong and consistent advocate for small businesses, I am always either donating my time, materials or monetary amounts, or I am promoting other businesses on my social media platform, especially Pacific Island owned. I believe in the whole concept of promoting each other regardless if you are either in the same field or selling the same items. “Promote each other and be successful together” (Nina).

At DBN, we understand that great accomplishments take hard work, dedication, patience, professionalism, attention to detail and most of all, passion! My number one priority is to meet the needs of my clients, always! The goal is to help clients plan, design, coordinate, decorate and execute unforgettable and a once-in-a-lifetime memorable event. To love and appreciate the art of putting together an event from start to finish. With an eye for design and fresh talent, I continue to not only share my love for creating memorable events, but I am also always willing to share extensive knowledge in event planning. With this, I have become an inspiration to her own daughters, and nieces who are part of my team. Each of them brings a unique sense of skill and quality to the business and are amazing, strong, talented, hardworking designers and entrepreneurs at heart.

“For with God nothing shall be impossible” (Luke 1:37).

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely has not been an easy or smooth road. Trying to work through doing what I do, while being a full time mom of seven, a wife and an entrepreneur is and was a lot. But I thank God for instilling in my a tremendous amount of patience, strength, determination and will power to do it for years. Of course, on the financial side of things, I have never applied for any loans to help, so everything is hard work, dedication, perseverance and trust and believing in God to provide.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
By trade, I am an event planner/designer. I am also a florist with the ability to create and make beautiful art with my bare hands. I also draw, and I teach. People know me through my creations and my ability to connect with people. I’d say I am proud of the fact that I have never given up, despite the challenges of life. What sets me apart from others, is my ability to simultaneously juggle motherhood and the responsibilities of a home life, while being a business owner who does everything as a one woman show by herself, while maintaining a smile on my face caring for people with love, compassion and empathy. In other words, my struggles are never in the way of who I am as a person.

Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
Don’t ever let your circumstances deter you from being a good person. Endure to mature and be kind.
