Today we’d like to introduce you to OSH.
Today we’d like to introduce you to OSH.
Hi OSH, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve always been involved in music since I could remember. I was always involved in choir and pretty much anything that had to do with music. When I was about 12, I started to sing at church. As I got older and had more musical understanding, I was leading services at church at 15/16. Around this same time, I was really involved in choir. I will never forget when I had a solo for one of our concerts. We were performing “Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen” and I had the main part. For this song we had the two choirs backing me up, it was such a moment for me. Straight out of high school I worked really hard to save up enough money to get myself a MacBook, that’s when I started messing around with GarageBand. I bought myself a little cheap $20 USB microphone and would just sing over karaoke tracks on Youtube. Eventually, my dad helped me buy a better microphone, headphones & an interface. I’ve always loved music and it was just a way for me to relax, and enter my own little world. At the time I would just anticipate going home so I could go make music. As time went on, I started to get better at making music. I had a friend that went to school for sound engineering, so I reached out to him to record music. He actually produced and mixed my first single “I’m Feeling.” As an artist sometimes it’s hard to translate the idea you have so others could understand, this is exactly what was happening to me. No matter who I would go to, it was never exactly what I had in my mind, so I started the journey of discovering what my sound was. My sound would then head into the direction of an alternative, r&b dreamland. With influences from my all-time favorite artist Mariah Carey, she is a musical legend. Other artists that inspire my sound are also The Weeknd, Kali Uchis, Tinashe, Jhené Aiko, & Cuco just to name a few. From GarageBand, I jumped to Logic Pro X and I was able to do much more! I started making my own beats and it was exactly what I was looking for because it was coming directly from me. I started to grow as an artist and a creative. When COVID first started I lost my job and I was home all day. I took that opportunity to just make a whole bunch of music and to expand my knowledge. It was kind of like a blessing in disguise. During this time, I would also start to dabble in social media, & photography. At the time my boyfriend was doing freelancing and his business was booming so I started to help him out. This gave me even more freedom to be able to do music whenever I wanted. Now I’ve solidified my sound to be chill r&b alternative music. I plan on releasing an ep project sometime this year that will have some songs that are even 3 years old, they’re old to me but will be fresh and new to the world.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not been easy. Like I mentioned before when I was first making music, the issue I was having was that no one could recreate the ideas that I had in my mind so I had to pretty much make it myself. It was a challenge but I love the outcome because I really feel like it’s 100% me. Another challenge I had was just getting out of my own head. I just needed to keep reminding myself that I wasn’t making music to please others, I was making it to express myself and because I loved making music. Confidence isn’t something that you get overnight but you have to fake it til you make it.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I make indie alternative r&b music. I write and produce all of my music. I think I’m best known for my dreamy background vocals and being able to immerse someone into my own world. What sets me apart is that I can go from singing to rapping to just flowing in seconds. Plus, I feel like there’s not a lot of artists that make Spanglish music. A lot of my music I switch back from English to Spanish very quickly and easily.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
Just do it! Most people don’t even get started. If you really love something and are passionate about it, go full force. You never know what the outcome could be if you don’t take a leap of faith. If it makes you happy just do it. When I was starting out, I wish I knew more resources for young independent artists like me.
