Today we’d like to introduce you to Phyllis Cahill.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started my artistic career as graphic artist, designing logos, brochures, menus, etc.. After working in that field for several years, I went to art school in Denver at Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design where I got my degree in illustration. I illustrated books and magazines for children for about 25 years. After reading a book about polymer clay, I became very interested in it. Now, all I do is make jewelry from polymer clay, metal and gemstones.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It wasn’t easy. It takes practice, patience and perseverance to do something well. I learned many things in each art field and the skills I acquired built upon one another. I was fortunate to find employers and clients who liked my work. I also had the loving support of my husband along the way.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I guess what sets me apart is that I design and fabricate what I hope are elegant, sophisticated pieces of jewelry from polymer clay. I sometimes use copper or sterling silver and gemstones in addition to polymer.
Polymer is still considered an alternative medium. Artists in the U.S. started working with it around 1980 and are continually discovering new things they can do with it. It’s a very versatile medium which allows me to make practically anything I can imagine. It’s lightweight, moldable and you can mix any opaque or translucent color you’d like.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I was a quiet child who like to read and spend time outdoors. I developed a serious interest in art during high school. I started gardening in my 20s and have always loved flowers and nature. I can’t say I’ve really changed much.
