Conversations with Randel Davis

Today we’d like to introduce you to Randel Davis.

Hi Randel , please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started working with my Xing Yi ( Sheeng E) ,and Bagua (Bah Gwah) instructor in late 2013 after my girlfriend I moved down from Granby. We had an awful break up, and I knew movement helps changes not just the way we feel, but think about things . So I was looking for new ways to move / train / feel and think. A training buddy of mine from long ago reached out to me and told me about his new instructor Owen. After 3 or 4 lessons I knew the system Xing Yi and the Instructor Owen and I were a fit. In other lives before meeting Owen had played bands and worked radio. Before I met Owen I had done radio , musicals, opera and worked with bands. Then Covid hit…..we were all stuck indoors expect for us taulo/Kata/ form and weapons based practitioners. Owen asked “Hey maybe we should do a podcast ….we have lunch all the time and talk about ways to update the training not the method, system or styles”…….the rest is history !!!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Wildly smooth . Our guests and interviews realize right away we love martial arts, teaching, and making people better. Our only hiccups are making first time podcasters open up and feel safe. Again that happens because our guests realize we care about their journey, their training……where are they going as teachers, how are they getting there ….are the students understanding …..etc. These sincere questions keeps the interview moving forward effortlessly .

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am your friendly Kung Fu Bus Driver in Boulder ….15 years and my Co-Host Owen is in the world of Accounting !!! Those are the 9-5 jobs. As for the podcast we do a mix of interviews with world class martial artists, but Owen and I sit down and break down our thoughts and ideas about training and teaching. Like a coaches corner. The audience gets to pick the brains of two practitioners with more than 50 years of combined martial knowledge. As for teaching Martial Arts Owen is an expert in the systems of Xing Yi and Bagua . If you look up Boulder Internal Arts on social media you can find Owen. I specialize in Wing Chun and have close to 30 years of experience you can find my school on social media at Red Forest Chinese Boxing.

What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
Our Podcast talks about Chinese Martial Arts styles and their place or relevance in modern society. Our podcast Kung Fu Conversations grows by thousands of people a year . No shifts or changes , just honest interviews , by people that love and practices these dying arts.
