Today we’d like to introduce you to Ravell Robinson.
Ravell, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Last time we spoke, I spoke about when I was younger and I had a speech impediment. So art was my way of communicating. I think, I also spoke about my third grade year when I learned about Pokémon; and I started trying to attempt to draw the Pokémon Slowbro. I got introduced to dinosaurs long before that through JurassicPark. so probably around, let’s say 7 years old, and then they became a fascination. But as I grew older and I started to truly have the dream of eventually becoming a paleontologist.
And though I didn’t become a paleontologist, a lot of my artwork does gravitate around the idea of dinosaurs, and dinosaur adjacent animals.
By the way, if you visit my art studio on magazine street, also known as the Art Spot located at 2011 Magazine Street in New Orleans Louisiana. You will see some of the most unique and breathtaking art from local artist. And local creators, along with a cafe. And upstairs gallery section.
Open Tuesday through Sunday, from 7 o’clock AM to 7 o’clock PM. I am personally there on weekends from 11 o’clock AM to 5 o’clock PM.
WE ARE A NEW GALLERY, SO IT WILL BE A FRESH EXPERIENCE.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not been easy at all. In fact, it has been really hard, but I will say that the challenges have not been without their own rewards, down this road. I didn’t want to take the easy way out. I wanted to earn every victory that I got. And so far that is happening, but those victories are hard fought .and they are not as profitable as one may think, but a lot of times the wins aren’t because of the monetary value.
They are because of the progression of the person or being on that journey, it symbolizes growth, maturity, and even through that. One should still keep their imagination alive.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Well, my work consists of strictly creating artwork, my work involves making sculptures, making paintings, putting art out on display, because I work within an art building. And so I’m creating from there a lot of the time. It’s, not as easy as one thinks, because as an artist, you know, it’s more of a behind the scenes job.
More than it is a job, that’s in your face. all you see is the concluded artwork, you don’t see the task at hand during The process and I think that leads to the misconception. That artists are just lazy. We’re not, we are just complex in our execution.
For example, about 8 years ago I had a very realistic dream where I was waking up and I heard a voice ask me if I was still making art, but I couldn’t figure out the voice or where it was coming from. And so I was asked around 4 times but it wasn’t until the third time that I became coherent as to what was happening. after that third time I asked, how did they know that I was making art, but they didn’t answer Although they were getting angrier, each time they asked. On the fourth time I answered yes, I am still making art. in an angry tone, I was told that you do not make art. You are art. The person who told me that was Pablo Picasso.
Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
When it comes to art, there is only one app that I use. That truly helps me to keep up with my art and everything associated with it. and that is Instagram; now there, may be more out there. But Instagram is old reliable for me. I haven’t done any podcasts yet. I’ve thought about it, but I don’t even know where I would get started.
Though there may be some discussion in the art studio building that I’m located in, so there may be some podcasts in the future.
