Conversations with Recet

Today we’d like to introduce you to Recet. He and his team share their story with us below:

Born Calvin (CJ) Fankhauser, Recet spent the first 5 years of his life in Plano, Texas. Thereon, he was raised in his hometown; Aurora, Colorado. Between his parents’ wide array of listening preferences, some of his earliest musical influences range between Gnarls Barkley, Seal, Maroon 5, Supertramp, Rush, Tool, Smashing Pumpkins, Devin Townsend, & Nerve. At the age of 8, Recet had his first experiences as a musician, playing alto saxophone in an extracurricular school band. At the age of 9, he experienced holding a pair of sticks behind a drum set for the first time, & it was that moment forth that he knew music would be his life. While attending middle school, he was mentored by multiple teachers, both at his school & in private lessons. Through this school music program, he acquired a wealth of knowledge & inspiration from experiences in Symphonic & Jazz bands, all while attending out-of-state drum camps, where he studied similar standardized styles of music, plus less academically-conventional genres like Metal, Fusion, & EDM. During these years, he accumulated a number of soloist awards as a drum set player + ensemble member. In turn, this gained the attention of higher institutions. Similar to middle school, Recet was also mentored by multiple teachers during his high school years; institutionalized and privatized. Here, he expanded his musical versatility through more ensembles such as marching band and wind ensemble. Amongst school activities, he played in various bands outside of school, including his first band “Katch-Up”. All the while, Recet found a particular interest in producing music in Logic Pro X for fun. Around that same time, he became very attuned and invested in Hip Hop/Rap, especially trap drums & percussion. Soon, he began to practice emulating those same electronically produced beats on acoustic drums, eventually finding the keys to performing them entirely verbatim.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Struggles are all part of the process 😉

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Recet is an accredited artist of sonic & personified versatility. Whether it be with GothBoiClique collaborator Holt Stairs, guitar-shredding energy-powerhouse Wavesy, soulful slacker pop moniker vocalist Wit Blu, or entirely solo, Recet channels energy to deliver his authentic character amidst a span of musical moods. In his self-produced & engineered song “Cutthroat”, Recet fortifies his presence as a rapper, capable of demonstrating heady & confrontational bars. Meanwhile, in his song “Before We Die” (co-produced & mixed + mastered by Holt Stairs), Recet reveals a soft-spoken, romantic, & sentimental side, all while performing with his own gravelly rock & roll style vocals.

How do you define success?
Doing that good good. That very good good. Jokes aside, I believe success is defined by the successor in their own right – the word is predicated on a goal(s) set by the individual/entity, and the achievement of said goal(s). At the same time, some might not even associate success solely with goals, if at all. I define success as achieving what you set out to achieve.
