Today we’d like to introduce you to Ryan Fleming.
Hi Ryan, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Matt and Ryan Fleming are the partners which own Joe Willy’s on Broadway. Both native Denverites, Matt grew up in Greenwood Village with his parents, and three siblings. He still resides in the village today, where he raised his six children. Ryan was born in Denver, but grew up in Burlington, IA, until eighth grade. He went to high school in the western suburbs of Chicago (Oak Park River Forest H.S.).
Matt, along with all of his children, are all CU Boulder alumni. Matt has been in sales, in various industries, through his professional life. He has also owned, operated roughly twenty bar/restaraunts in and around Denver over the years. Some of the projects Matt has had an interest in over the years (not a bad list) : Wazoo’s on Wazee, Spanky’s, Reivers, Gigglin Grizzly, just to name a few. You may notice Vibe Concepts as current owners/operators of a handful of the aforementioned establishments. Matt is a lifelong friend of Dan Shipp, owner of Vibe Concepts. Their track record in the industry speaks for itself.
Ryan graduated from the University of Iowa, upon completion of his time at OPRF. The first real bar he was a part of, and helped operate, was the Union Bar in downtown Iowa City. After leaving Iowa City, Ryan stayed in the industry in a handful of restaraunts in Lincoln Park, and River North, in Chicago. During the day, he spent a number of years as an independent floor trader at the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, in the S&P 500 and Eurodollar futures pits. Ryan’s father, Joe Fleming, was a long time operator of hotels. The last hotel was the Congress in Chicago. Ryan grew up in the hospitality business, and always loved the industry.
As Matt and Ryan’s lives traversed, Ryan and his wife, and two sons moved back to Denver, (Centennial and Englewood). Matt and Ryan decided to get back into the business with Joe Willy’s on Broadway as their first play. As we are in the 19th month of business, we have been tracking positively month over month, year over year. We are about to commence construction on a 25′ x 25′ patio, on the north side of the building. It will double our downstairs capacity, will have 5 TV’s, and be the premiere spot on South Broadway for brunch on the weekends. Lunch and dinner all the time. And will be another room to rent for private events at Joe Willy’s. We’re just getting started.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The biggest struggles we’ve had were in the renovations period. Had to alter our drawings twice, which cost us almost a year as we waited for permits. The other difficult part prior to opening was we planned and did our renovations right at the end of Covid…..commodity prices were hitting all time highs. The problems we have experienced as an operating venture, are ones that are currently ravaging our sector of the industry. These being to not only find reliable, professional help. But the cost of paying those key employees the wage they deserve, without going broke is a never ending battle. Lease prices have finally begun to flatten, but they sure aren’t cheap. And the unfortunate truth about doing business in Denver, as an independently owned operation, it is so incredibly restrictive as far as the permitting process, whether it be at inception, or renewels. Layers of fees, multiple agencies to satisfy for any kind of project big or small, are about three yards short of insane for any sole proprietor owning/operating in Denver County. Matt and Ryan have operated in many cycles over the years, good and bad, and we’ll do what it takes to keep building solid, profitable, neighborhood joints.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
What we do at Joe Willy’s is provide an experience that is unmatched in Denver. Our food menus have a Chicago slant. We offer MidWestern Tavern style pizza that we would put up against any. It’s the real Chicago pizza, thin wafer crust, which is cut in squares. Our Italian Beef and Combo sandwiches are second to none in the area. And yes, you can drag that baby through the garden. We offer a wide variety of different wing sauces. Again, we’re biased, but have yet to find better ones. We offer amazing burgers, grilled or fried chicken sandwiches. Burgers or chicken sandwiches with pimento cheese. We have an expansive drink menu, including a unique specialty cocktail, and mocktail list. Our happy hour offers amazing deals on apps and drinks, every weekday. We are extremely proud of our menu, our party throwing, and catering expertise. As we are alo trying to cater to everyone in the market, we offer Gluten Free and Vegan options. We are the home base to the Denver Highlanders Rugby team. We are also home base to the Northwest Region of the Navy Seals, which we are beyond proud to say. But what we our most proud of is our inviting enviroment, that is the cleanest in our market. Our most precious asset is our staff. In these difficult times, we have an extraordinary staff that are not only amazing proffessionals, they are amazing people that will make you feel comfortable, and excited to come back.
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
We’ll speak to this, through the lense of our immediate market. We are not trying to reinvent the wheel at Joe Willy’s. We are an inexpensive, premiere place to watch a game, serving pizza and burgers……that model is recession proof, of course, if done correctly. We sit in a restaraunt that was a successful pizza place for over 30 years before us (Pasquinis). In a market that has a fifth of the density that it does today. We are a perfect compliment for all of the players in our submarket. Players that are all quite successful. There are currently over 3000 residential units being built as I type this. There is a new, 14,500 seat womens soccer stadium going up two blocks from us. With more residential, and commercial activity all around it. We love where we are currently positioned, and with the completion of our patio, which will double our downstairs capacity, we are confident that we are prepared to take every advantage of our location. We couldn’t be more bullish on the future of South Broadway, and South Denver in general. Throw in the new Broncos stadium in Burnham Yard……
