Conversations with Ryan & Karen Deterding

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ryan & Karen Deterding

Hi Ryan & Karen, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Family Farms are dying. But together we are stronger.
We are Ryan and Karen Deterding, my husband is a sixth-generation rancher, continuing the legacy his family started over 125 years ago. Our true passion has always been in agriculture. The traditional cattle market is something every rancher struggles with. That’s why we took a different approach—bringing beef directly from our pastures to your table. This is a new tradition for our family. Let us feed you!

We’ve been raising cattle the right way for over a century. Since 1899, our family has practiced regenerative ranching, caring for the land and our livestock to ensure healthy, sustainable beef for generations to come.

We focus on regenerative ranching, meaning we work with nature, not against it. Our cattle graze rotationally, improving soil health and producing nutrient-dense beef without shortcuts. No middlemen, no long supply chains—just quality beef raised the way it should be.

Why Buying Ranch Beef Direct is Better

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The Big 4 control 85% of the beef industry . It’s always a struggle when the market fluctuates. Ranchers don’t get paid what they are worth. But I always say the rancher will feed the people weather he is poor or rich.

When the market goes back up we are fine. But we learned recently that we could create our own predictable market if we connected directly with the consumers .

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My husband has only fed cattle his whole life. And I was a dental for awhile before going all in on the ranch.

Preserving Tradition, Building the Future: Our Ranch-to-Table Journey

For over a century, our family has called this land home.

So this land and the skills passed down are crucial.

Ryan has always been involved with cattle, following in the footsteps of six generations before him. Karen was born a cowboy’s daughter, Ranching, was never far from her heart.

We got married, had 2 kids and we worked off-farm jobs for awhile , but the pull of the land never faded. Recently, we purchased a homestead and stepped back into ranching full-time.

The “big boss”—my husband’s grandfather and the third generation on this land—is now 92 years old, and it’s time for us to take a bigger role in keeping our family legacy alive.

For too long, the cattle industry has been controlled by the big four meat packers, Tyson, Cargill, National Beef, and JBS, making it hard for independent ranchers to earn a fair living.

But ranching isn’t just a job—it’s a way of life we refuse to let go of.

We always said the rancher will feed the people. No matter if he’s rich or poor. That’s how important this lifestyle is to ranchers. We always finish the job.

That’s why we’re starting a new tradition: From Our Family Farm to Your Family Table.

We raise Prime Angus beef on our regenerative ranch, just as our ancestors did before us. By selling directly to consumers, we’re not just ensuring a better future for our family—we’re also offering our neighbors the opportunity to know exactly where their beef comes from.

We believe ranchers can earn more and help folks save grocery mark ups by connecting with the people who truly matter: the families who value tradition, & locally raised beef. Our goal is simple—to preserve the land, care for our cattle, and build a stronger future for the next generation.

Located on the Colorado Plains, just three hours from Denver, our ranch isn’t just a piece of land—it’s our history, our livelihood, and our legacy. And now, we’re proud to share it with you.

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
I see alot more farmers going direct. This way of earning and feeding folks is the future. Only 7% out of 1.8 million farms sell direct to consumers. So we need more farms going direct. We need to save small farms and going direct is the best way to garrentee success.
