Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Knowles.
Sarah, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My Public Relations degree was in the school of Journalism and Mass Communications. At the time, all of the fundamental writing and grammar courses I had to endure were the banes of my existence.
However, I soon realized I had a knack for stringing together words and phrases in a way that resonated with people—and not just in order to hit a word count.
When I landed a corporate Marketing job as a Content Writer out of college, I realized just how valuable that foundational knowledge was, paired with a little creative freedom. And, as it turns out when it’s not a school assignment, I actually LIKED writing.
Fast forward to March 2020, I was locked down in Malaga, Spain when I received an email from a network connection—a successful, full-time writer and business owner who I had built a relationship with, knowing I one day wanted to follow in her footsteps. She recommended me for an opportunity and that opportunity was the catalyst that would, ultimately, catapult me into the freelance world.
When I was forced to move back in with my parents for a year during the pandemic, I decided to use the financial support as an opportunity to go ALL in on growing my own business.
In my first year, I became LLC’d, was able to surpass my corporate salary, and moved to Denver with my boyfriend. Along the way, I’ve gained incredible experience, (virtually) connected with people from all industries and around the globe, and I couldn’t be happier with my decision to be my own full-time boss. I’m so proud of how far I’ve come and know that there is still so much opportunity that lies ahead.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Yes and no, in some ways it has been incredibly fortuitous in the sense that my network connections and relationships really opened up doors for me early on. I also knew that owning my own business was the end goal for me; so, over the previous year, I had been slowly and quietly building my brand whenever I had some extra time, which also set me up for success.
The other aspect was the pandemic. While it was a devastating setback for most industries, it offered a unique opportunity for people, like me, who were pursuing virtual work. New small businesses and entrepreneurs were hitting the market needing websites, social, emails, etc. and I initially built the bulk of my business meeting these needs on freelance platforms, such as Fiverr and Upwork.
The biggest challenge was accepting that the nature of building your own business without a backup plan meant a lot of instability, uncertainty, insecurity, rejection, and being underpaid at times. But, again, I had the luxury of leaning on my parents during that time, which I am so grateful for.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a Creative Content and Copy Writer, who specializes in writing copy for entrepreneurs and service-based businesses. However, I pride myself on my wide range of experience (from large, corporate, industrial businesses to small, entrepreneurial, relational businesses) that has made me not only skilled in adopting any brand’s tone of voice, but also in really clarifying and elevating their messaging for their audience and to help them stand out in their industry. I strive to put my clients first, communicate clearly and effectively and work TOGETHER with them to create copy that converts and content they are proud of.
Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
I lived in Spain for a year from 2019-2020 and have a passion for traveling! And am so grateful my work has given me the freedom to do so. I hope to return to living overseas in the next few years.
