Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Mason.
Hi Sarah, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I grew up loving art and dreamed of doing nothing else. I started painting when I was three and haven’t stopped since. I draw every day for hours and hours. I collect hundreds of finished sketchbooks and paintings. I told my parents I wanted to be an “underwater mermaid princess artist.”
As I grew up, I learned to embrace the things that set me apart and channel myself into my work. My humor, identity, girliness, and self-image are central to my work. I do a lot of landscapes inspired by Colorado, and self-portraiture about my life and experiences. My art is deeply nostalgic and reflective while remaining colorful and intricate.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I had a fairly tumultuous childhood, which I deal with in my art. The work I create about my past experiences with trauma has led to some of the deepest connections I’ve made to others through my work. Thankfully, my parents have been incredibly supportive and helped me go to Denver School of the Arts, even though we lived far away, and Rhode Island School of Design, despite its challenges being out of state. They are my biggest cheerleaders.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a painter who creates colorful, psychedelic art that layers pattern, texture, light, and shape. I make my work feel alive by adding details to every inch of my compositions. I often play with innuendo and humor. Everything has a story, no matter how small. I paint myself a lot because it’s the life and perspective I know best. Other subjects include things from my everyday life and environment.
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I have been fortunate to have supportive parents who wanted me to pursue a career in the arts from the beginning. Talent in art is partly a matter of luck, but mostly a result of dedication and practice. The good thing is, I’m not lucky. Anyone can be just as skilled with enough time and focus.
