Conversations with Sean Mcleod

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sean Mcleod.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I moved to Colorado in early 2014 to join the cannabis industry. I really enjoyed that career path but I wanted to supplement my creativity in a different way. I started taking painting seriously around 2018, I fell in love with it further after taking a trip to Austria to study under Phillip Rubinov Jacobson a great teacher of Mischtecnik. When I came back to Boulder I started exploring all different painting styles but was doing it alone. In the summer of 2022 I went to the Madhouse Art Campout where I met a ton of friends and started making collaborative work soon after with Charlie Potesky and John Speaker. Since then I have done a ton of live painting in the Denver area from larger music shows to brewery events. Now I am finishing a collaborative show with Charlie Potesky through Catalyst Galleries that will open June 14th 2025 and that’s about it!

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Most of my struggles are fairly common just learning to overcome my own habits with my creative process and constantly look to grow. I have always maintained a job during my art career so I haven’t relied as much monetarily on sales as some of my peers.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
A lot of my early paintings dealt with sci-fi/fantasy and landscape work. Lately I’ve been painting low Brow pop and surrealist art work with meme like influences. I use Acrylic as a medium although I occasionally use oils.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
I just want to make the best art I can if I want to focus on making more detailed work or improving my color theory or composition that’s what I do. The most important thing to me personally that feels like a success is following my own road of progression.
