Hi Shaun & Sara, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Shaun & Sara’s paths converged in an unlikely corner of the remote mountain town of Bishop, California, where their fateful encounter sparked a profound creative partnership. Their shared passion for music and a deep connection with the natural world set the stage for a profound collaborative journey.

Shaun Diaz, a master cellist and cinematic composer, brings decades of technical mastery and expressive range to the project. His dynamic scoring and refined technique provide a powerful counterpart to Sara Kaiser’s haunting vocals and poetic lyricism. The result is a sonic landscape both expansive and intimate—music that leaves audiences speechless.

With an ear for the cinematic and a taste for artistry, Shaun & Sara create immersive experiences through sound design, storytelling, and a deeply meaningful presence when they perform.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Not at all. Like many independent artists, we’ve faced the disillusioning gap between the depth of our work and the structures that dominate the modern music industry. Shaun used to make a living in the era of CD’s, and before licensing marketplaces came to be, that was also a legitimate source of revenue. Now we face predatory streaming platforms like Spotify which pays out .003 cents per stream. Algorithms reward trends, not artistry. Venues often prioritize draw over emotional impact, originality, or skill. And the constant demand to be “content creators” feels odds with the necessarily slow nature of our process.

We’ve wrestled with visibility in a system that doesn’t know how to categorize what we do—our sound doesn’t fit neatly into a genre box, and we don’t chase virality. There have been moments of exhaustion and disappointment, wondering if the path we’ve chosen is viable at all, or if the noise of the industry will drown out the signal of our work.

Despite it all, we’ve stayed devoted, because we were born to do this. We love composing and performing, we prioritize integrity over popularity, and we reach people one meaningful experience at a time. That’s the kind of success we believe in.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
We create immersive musical experiences that weave live cello, layered vocals, ambient sound design, and storytelling. Our work lives at an intersection of cinematic, atmospheric, folk, celtic, jazz, and crossover classical.

Shaun is known for his expressive mastery of the cello—equal parts precision and innovation. With formal training in classical and cinematic composition, he brings a rare depth and sensitivity to every note. Sara’s voice has time and time again left people speechless or brought a room to utter silence. Together, we create worlds in sound, and the great thrill is taking people with us.

What sets us apart is that we have a unique style and sound that simply doesn’t sound like anyone else. We bring a lot of attention to the details of layered, atmospheric sound, and our songs are all born of improvisations. We use cutting edge technology to express our creative ideas while honoring traditional training. We seek to create worlds and call people in. Our audiences feel that, and the feedback has always been phenomenal.

How do you define success?
This is a question that could be answered in many ways. As musicians facing a very difficult moment in the industry, we have to at least to some extent define success by our joy of creating. That writing the songs is the success, and it certainly is one of our favorite feelings to be in the depths of a composition.

In the music industry, success would be defined by having a large following on streaming platforms, playing big shows, selling out venues, etc. However, these metrics do not necessarily reflect actual depth, skill, or meaning of the artists’ creations. Opportunities often come about through connections, showing up in certain circuits over and over again, or getting lucky with social media promotion.

Ultimately, we want to feel that what we do is meaningful.
