“Strutting Phoenix” at Red Rocks
Today we’d like to introduce you to Strutting Phoenix.
Hi Strutting, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started my art career by attending school at the Denver School of the Arts which helped me to understand art as a study to learn and grow. From there, I attended school at Rocky Mountain College of Art + Design where I learned to see art as a career and learned how to make it a business. From those two experiences, I have been preparing to make products and applying for jobs in the creative field.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
I would say the road changes depending on what challenges I have encountered. One of the things that I struggled with at the beginning of learning how to use art as a craft was the challenges and difficulties that exist in the beginning. Such as trying many different mediums to find out what works best with the artists, which can take a long time to pinpoint. One of the more recent struggles that I faced during college was transitioning from traditional art to digital media. In a way, it’s like starting from the bottom, but with existing art experience and persistence to learning new skills.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My artwork is a digital modern comic concept worked to fusion with astonishing vibrant colors, creating fiery defining works not seen before in a modern medium. I specialize in making character work and concept art in general. I like to use saturated colors and always have my “Pocket Color Wheel” in order to portray interesting color combinations in my art. Recently I made an 8 inches by 24 inch digital landscape painting which was a hard challenge. I’m proud that I can push myself outside of my comfort zone in many different ways, whether it’s subject matter or color schemes.
What matters most to you? Why?
Defining my heritage from a lineage of an ascended Aztec empire lost to time but strong tradition influenced my work in concepts from its heroic mythology and mysterious history. Getting the opportunity to share my heritage with others bridges cultural similarities defining a shared familiarity. There is always an opportunity to capture humanity’s culture and that can be woven into art not lost in definition or language. Work that feels metal and looks groovy presented in a stylistic and defining manner for all to enjoy.
