Today we’d like to introduce you to The Regular. They and their team shared their story with us below:
It all started with Oscar Aguilar hitting the road to California as a one-man band in 2014. He started by busking on the Santa Monica peer and regularly responding to Craigslist ads looking for bands while living out of his car. With no particular goal in mind, he was only trying to play music and live.
During a tour of the southern US, he realized playing shows alone wasn’t ideal. He needed a bigger sound. He decided to make his way back to his hometown in Chicago and record his first EP. Shortly after, he met keyboardist Spencer Adamson and bassist Scott Barber. After finishing the EP, they decided to move west to Colorado, where some of their favorite bands resided.
After settling in, they would record their first two singles out of The Spot Studios in Evergreen, where they met session drummer Patrick Smith. After numerous attempts to persuade him to join The Regular, he finally gave in and joined. Together, they started recording their first full-length record at Hahn Audio in Aurora, CO. During the recording process, they recruited multi-instrumentalist Cormac Piper to form the band that they are today.
Over the last six years, The Regular has been performing in venues in Colorado and across the country. With a new record on the horizon, they are setting out to be the best band in any genre that has come out of Colorado.
Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Not at all. With a name like “The Regular,” many promoters wouldn’t take us seriously at first until they would come to a live show and see for themselves. When we first moved here, we struggled to get shows until Oscar marched into the office of a local promoter and, uncommonly, talked with them face-to-face instead of relying on emails. They said we had balls for doing that, so they started hooking us up with shows.
The pandemic was also a huge blow to not just us but all musicians. We were relatively new to Colorado at the time and were only just starting to gain a foothold in the local music scene. We used this time to focus on recording and writing new material, but we had also lost the income from performing, which drew out the recording process quite a lot.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
The Regular is an indie-folk band based in Denver, CO. We draw on an eclectic array of inspiration and approach songwriting with sincere storytelling and an often punk-driven approach that lends itself to rowdy and energetic live shows.
We’re super proud of our first record, which was released in 2023. Our live shows and on-stage banter are what set us apart as performers.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
That’s a tough question to answer since there are 5 of us.
We all come from wildly different backgrounds socially, economically, etc. The thing we all have in common, though, is that we’ve all been obsessed with music from the beginning.
