Today we’d like to introduce you to The Sogs. Them and their team share their story with us below:
Lee Hutchinson and Dylan McConnell have been friends for close to twenty years now, and both of them have always been interested in music. Lee has been in various bands and has been writing music for most of his life, and about ten years ago, he convinced Dylan to join him and a couple of others to form their first band together, called Harvestmen. Harvestmen disbanded in 2016, and Lee and Dylan created a new group together called The Sogs. They’ve been playing under that name for over six years now in various lineups, starting out as a full-band three-piece and currently playing primarily as an acoustic two-piece.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road has been mostly smooth for us, honestly. We already get along great and are fortunate to have a huge overlap in our musical styles and influences. We’ve been close friends for so long now that we’re able to understand one another’s strengths and defer to the other when we know that person is better at certain aspects of writing, performing, touring and marketing.
The challenges we’ve faced are typically challenges we set for ourselves. We’re constantly trying to make sure we stay elastic and are constantly learning. We experiment with writing and performing differently to see how far we can push our comfort zone and to see what we can gain from doing so. We’ve had a mindset for a while now that we’ll play just about anywhere at anytime, and that has taken us to some truly memorable places with some amazing people. It’s also been a blast learning to go from a full band to an acoustic sound. We’re used to conjuring up a wall of sound in clubs and concert venues, and switching gears to be more mindful of our sound fitting smaller venues with longer sets has been fun and rewarding and has shown us a completely different side of performing.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
We’re a band; a pair of creatives, writers, and musicians. We’d like to think what sets us apart (and what we’re most proud of) is being genuine versions of ourselves at all times. Never once have we tried to imitate a sound or an image. We let the work and style fall out of us naturally, and that’s how we’ll always operate.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
We’re lucky to have a large group of regulars who are always supporting us, coming to our shows, spreading the word about us, wearing our shirts, and plastering our stickers on everything they can find. We’ve also been very fortunate to meet new fans at most places we play. There’s nothing like playing music to a stranger and seeing them enjoy something you’ve created.
The credit for any amount of success we’ve achieved is thanks to both these friends and strangers. Without people caring about what we’re doing, it wouldn’t make much sense to keep going. Even on days when we might feel down about the music scene, we’ve always been brought back to life by remembering that there are people out there who love what we do. You can’t really quantify how important that is when it comes to giving yourself a reason to keep moving.
