Today we’d like to introduce you to Zachary Lindsay.
Hi Zachary, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
I was born and raised in Alexandria, Virginia just outside of Washington D.C. a melting pot of various vibrant cultures, with strong undertones of punk-rock & Go-Go Music. Skateboarding is where my journey with Photography first started. Taking photos and making skate videos is where I initially got familiar with the art form, and it led to creating for local brands and businesses.
Shortly after I decided to start traveling and working as I went, for about 2 years I traveled around New Zealand, Australia & Southeast Asia. Eventually, I started working for Marriott Hotels in Indonesia shooting commercials for them. When Covid hit unfortunately we had to put a wrap on the Indo Hotel Tour and come back home for the sake of our safety.
With the need to push on further and find new ground, I decided I would come back and start anew in Denver, CO. My father grew up here so It seemed fitting to come to a place with strong family roots but also presented a new challenge for my art. During the Pandemic, I found my first film camera and a newfound passion for the medium.
I have been working in Denver as an artist for 3 years now. I am soon opening a studio for my work as well as building a strong community around film photography. I am now seeking to use my photography as an art form to capture things in a way that resembles the way we used to view the world as children, Vibrant, and full of color. I want to evoke that nuanced feeling in every picture I take and want to share that with everyone.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
There are still many obstacles I face, I wish I could say that was all behind me but I feel like that comes with the territory. The biggest obstacle I’ve had to face is myself, I am constantly trying to balance perfectionism while allowing art to be art in all its imperfection & subjectivism.
Throughout my journey, I’ve gone through so many changes, transformations, and realizations. My art is always changing and I am just trying to adapt to it and communicate it the best way I can.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in Film Photography, I am known for photographing mundane things in my day to day, capturing them in an aesthetically pleasing way that also tells a story outside of ours. I am most proud of the art exhibits I have done over the years in Denver, one of which is now on display at MiddleState Coffee off Santa Fe & 2nd Ave. along with the various music videos I have done for local artists.
What sets me apart is my ability the capture things in a new way, almost as if I can make a seemingly boring place look amazing and colorful. I am constantly searching for new ways to do that rather than sticking to a formulated method of creating.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
Samuel Bydlon, a fellow creative and friend. He has helped me grow in ways that I never knew I could. My Partner Heather is a big inspiration and a strong point in my life. Daniel Agre is a longtime friend/co-worker and has shown me how to do so many things in the creative world.
