Conversations with Zachary Visconti

Today we’d like to introduce you to Zachary Visconti.

Hi Zachary, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve been playing music since I was younger and have played in a handful of bands since. I grew up in Fremont, California, lived in Nebraska throughout college, and moved to Colorado with my wife after getting married — we’ve been here for about 5 years, minus about a year in the early pandemic when we moved to California.

Musically speaking, I began writing and recording my own music pretty early on, and at many times alongside my longtime good friend Matt Scorca — who has helped me to write many of the songs throughout safekeeper’s repertoire. While I’ve played in a ton of bands over the years, safekeeper is the culmination of many of my musical roots, and particularly of many of the raw, messy, and dynamic indie rock bands of the 1990s.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Live music hasn’t been particularly ideal during the pandemic, so I think a lot of musicians have struggled with that, in some way or another, for the past couple of years.

For me, writing music has always been a means of documenting and processing my feelings, thoughts and experiences in a given period of time. While life is rarely “a smooth road” for any person, music has helped me cope in ways that few things have been able to.

Live music is a little bit different than the writing side. It’s no less expressive, though, and I came to love the cathartic performance element of playing in rock bands early on. The pandemic has put a little bit of a damper on performing for me, but even the few shows we’ve played since the pandemic began have been incredible, in terms of the “art performance” element.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a musician originally, but that path has also led me to a lot of other skills. A lot of people don’t realize how drastically different the skills of playing music, running live audio, writing music, recording, mixing, and mastering music all are, let alone performing, networking, and general business-y sides of the field.

There are a lot of parts that aren’t very glorious.

Safekeeper is the band I’m currently most known for.

I’m most proud of the evolution of my own artistry, and audio production — both have come a long way since I started on this path many years ago.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
Trust your gut.
