Today we’d like to introduce you to Alyssa Baldi.
Hi Alyssa, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey really took life in August of 2019. I run my own freelance graphic design gig, so I have a natural creative flair, if you will, and had done some baked goods here and there but just for the fun of it, with no baking background. May of 2019, I did my first custom sugar cookies, among other treats for my kid’s birthdays (science theme) and got continued encouragement to do something with it. So August of 2019, I put my design skills to work for myself and created Sonuva Biscuit (Son of a Biscuit). The whole inspiration came from my kids. I mostly made all of their birthday goodies and the name, also because of them. I find this (son of a biscuit) being my catchphrase around them daily. And—it seemed fitting being a baked good company.
I feel incredibly grateful for my customers and the success I’ve had over the last two years because my business continues to grow solely by word of mouth, which is something I take a lot of pride in. Each order is made fresh to order, and everything is custom. I hear incredible feedback and love to see each customer’s reaction as they open their box of cookies… or cakes, or cupcakes, cake pops, you name it. I’m both excited and scared with what’s to come because I feel I’m at a fork in the road. Make the step to grow bigger or stay small and comfortable… we will just have to see what God has in store for me.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
You know, I think this is where I feel so blessed. I haven’t had too many hurdles, mostly, I think, because I really didn’t think this would become all that it has. I had no expectations, so the growth has been truly amazing, and I am grateful for all my customers. I think my hardest battles have been finding a balance between two young kids full time, a graphic design business, and now a baked goods business. There are times where I’m up until 5 am finishing an order due by 8 am, then back to working on graphic projects. I’ve learned to be a master multitasker for sure!
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I make any kind of baked good you can think of, mostly the basics, cookies, cake, cupcakes, cake pops, but you request it. I will work my booty off to make it happen. I specialize in my custom sugar cookies. I think that is what I am primarily known for. I’m really proud of the improvements in my decorating skills; they’ve come a long way from my first set of cookies.
I think what sets me apart from others is there is no cookie-cutter orders here (no pun intended). Everything is completely custom. Also, I get a lot of feedback on how good my cookies look but also that they are soft and delicious. I hear time and time again that someone order cookies somewhere else and they were beautiful but were so hard and lack flavor, so I also take a lot of pride in these compliments.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
Family. Being with family, family gatherings, etc. In an Italian family, you know family is important and a lot of our gatherings are around good foods. I think this translates into my baking. I imagine my customer is bringing their order as not just a dessert but for a gathering, for memories, and why not have something tasty and beautiful to be excited over and share together.
