Today we’d like to introduce you to Alyssa Mongiovi.
Hi Alyssa, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Ever since I can remember, music has been part of my life. As a kid, my parents gave me a princess castle alarm clock that doubled as a radio. I rarely used it to wake up—instead, I’d lie on my bed for hours, completely absorbed in whatever was playing. I’d jump between classic rock stations spinning Led Zeppelin and The Beatles, jazz and blues stations featuring Ella Fitzgerald and B.B. King, and country stations that introduced me to Dolly Parton and Johnny Cash.
I remember getting excited when the DJs shared details about the musicians who played in the band, how certain songs were written, and what inspired their albums. I was hooked. I started writing music constantly—twenty songs a day, no exaggeration. All I wanted was an acoustic guitar so I could learn to play “Jolene.”
I was lucky to grow up in the era of family computers and slow-but-mighty YouTube. It might have taken forever to buffer, but it gave me just enough time to jot down lyrics before they slipped away while listening to songs by The Beatles, Journey, and Rush. When I was eight, my parents got me a purple Hannah Montana guitar. I played it until it broke—and I’ve been playing ever since.
About a year ago, I found myself in a life that didn’t feel like it was mine. I was in an office job with a good title, but I was miserable. I felt entirely unfulfilled by my work, but found myself on the fence until I started gigging again. I played in a small cover band. It didn’t take me long to start writing about all of my experiences over the last few years. I felt like I opened a vault that I couldn’t close. I spent the rest of the year working at that awful corporate job for the money to make my music real. I tried to find joy in my work again, but I knew that life was over for me. I started networking and eventually got in touch with Alex Houton–producer for AHM Media. About a year ago, I wrote “Poet,” and we got to work. I’ve loved this song since it was just a concept, and I’m so grateful to Alex for bringing the vision to life so beautifully. If you want to listen to “Poet,” it comes out Aug 8th, 2025, on all streaming platforms.
Six months after the song was written, while we were in the middle of working out the kinks, I started showing up at every local mic night that I could find and networking as much as possible. I won’t lie, I did a lot of pretty awful gigs in the beginning, but it didn’t matter if I was playing to a full room or an audience of one; there was absolutely nothing that beat the feeling of playing my music live. Now, I play all around Colorado Springs and Denver with my incredible band that I met along the way. It’s so cool to play my music with people who are so talented and genuinely care about interpreting what I write. I’m a lucky girl.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I mean, any life-changing experience comes with a huge amount of sacrifice. I won’t lie, this whole thing has been a huge amount of work. I work part-time at a jazz radio station as the music director–meaning that I listen to music and decide what goes into our music library all morning. Once I leave the station, I practice for a few hours before heading to band practice, open mics, writing sessions, reaching out to venues, marketing, or planning the release of my new single, “Poet.” I would say that everything about being a musician in this market is an uphill battle. It definitely is hard work, but man, I would be lying if I didn’t say I loved it. The moment you get up on that stage and get to play something you made live, you start to understand why starving artists do it. There’s nothing like making something that you believe is truly beautiful.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a singer-songwriter and performer specializing in bluesy rock and emotionally honest storytelling. I blend elements of classic rock, soul, and Americana with a modern edge, pulling inspiration from artists like The Beatles, Ella Fitzgerald, and Dolly Parton. My work is rooted in authenticity; I aim to write songs that feel lived-in, vulnerable, and true to the human experience.
I’m most proud of the leap I took to pursue music full-time after years in the corporate world. That decision wasn’t easy, but it led me to create work that finally feels aligned with who I am. My debut single “Poet” is a reflection of that journey, of finding your voice again after losing it in the noise. I don’t want to be anyone’s muse; I want to be the one with the pen.
What sets me apart is the way I connect with audiences. Whether I’m performing with a full band or just a guitar in hand, I strive to make each moment feel personal and real. I’m not chasing trends—I’m chasing truth. And I think listeners can feel that.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
I wish I could say something about the business side of it all, but I think I’ve ultimately learned that all of us on this planet are more alike than we think. Every time I write a song, I feel like I’m experiencing something unique and isolated, but nothing happens in a vacuum. It feels like every night someone tells me about a hyper-specific moment in their life that changed them forever, but they were finally able to make peace with it. Of course, I’m sure they would have found their way there at some point in their life, but it feels good to be able to play any kind of role in it. I really believe that people need music. They need things in this world that are beautiful and real. People want a real connection and art that isn’t fueled by financial gain.
